At some point soon it's going to be impossible to ignore the financial argument for renewables. It's already getting cheaper to produce power via renewables even where it's not subsidized. Things like the battery storage for SA are interim solutions. I think eventually most houses and businesses will generate and store their own power making the grid redundant.

Any of you follow Fully Charged show on youtube? They've done some interesting episodes about possible solutions, like micro smart grids. Also episodes about other energy storage tech.

The sun grows the grass, and know the sun fuels the mower to cut it too.

Oh. Ok. Sorry I missed it completely.

I get excited about things like this. I don't expect others to understand.

I've got a battery powered Ryobi but my new place has no grass at all, thank fuck for that!! During the wet season up here the grass grows so bloody quick you've got to cut it virtually every week and in the extreme heat, man I don't miss that at all. :faint:

Once we get net metering (who knows when that will be origin tells me 'there is no timeframe') I can't wait to start powering things from my panels directly. The petrol mower will go, the hot water will go from gas to electricity. Gunna be great.

Love the electric mower/edger, lighter and does not bog down and stall.

I got my bill for the first quarter where the panels were in for the whole period, $8 :D To date I've generated more than I've used so it's the access charges that meant I had to pay anything at all. I don't think it will always work out so well as we're getting into the build up and starting to use the aircons, however I'm also generating more per day as well.

I think next year during the dry I'll have to get up on the roof with the hose every few weeks to wash the dust off the panels, we had a bit of an early overnight rain and I immediately noticed a jump in the output. During the dry up here it won't rain for a good 4-5 months so the dust will build up.

Depending on the panels, some have good "Nano" coatings that make it harder for stuff like that to settle.

Good timing, I have another 5.8kW going in tomorrow all going well.

Next step, batteries.

My additional 5kW system went in and the tech fianlly came and set up the monitoring software (Solar Edge). Turns out the original 1.6kW of panels were disconnected, so they will refit the old inverter and after a while we can put the monitoring thingies on the old panels and run the full 6.6kW.

However, with the 5kW system, we are generating a hell of a lot of power! The old system on the pitched roof managed 8-10kWH on a good day but this new system is cracking 40kWh! Here's yesterday.

If those dickheads at Origin ever get their act together and install our nett metering, we will be able to run our house (and then some) off the panels and next year - battery!

And, something even more exciting than batteries....

Nice, I have the same Solar Edge inverter and the software is pretty handy, I've also got the app on the phone, even comes with a widget to go on the home screen. Your setup looks to be setup much more optimally than mine, my system is 6.3kW and the best days this time of year will get up around 37kWh for the day.

Sars, our roof has only about a 2 degree slope, so almost flat - catches the sun almost all day. Much more effective than the pitched tile roof.

My boss just got solar. I'm sold on it now. Gonna sort it out start of the new year. Might even start making calls this week!

Will your new solar installation provide enough power during the winter?

Actually, how much does solar change through the year where you are?

Easily enough, when the fucking thing is working properly. This latest install has been a shitshow.

Here is the graph (bottom one) showing the daily average over the past year for the old system.

http://norbtech.com/solar/stats/Xantrex_Power.html

In theory, with the combined totals I should get about 55-60kWh a day in summer and possibly as much as 25-30kWh in winter.

Complete monthly breakdowns here.

Nice one. I love stats :D

In some ways that's great but it also means you now have the technology and don't need to develop it further, which is bad news for us. I was hoping the sunnier countries would develop the technology to make it so effective that we could use it in winter, but if you can already power your house on it the development will probably slow.

We do have a fair few clear, sunny days through winter but the sun sits relatively low in the sky so I'm not sure how much use it is.

if anything, development is on the rise.
