My 35 year old Tag 1000 Professional is currently winging it's way to Switzerland. Dropped it off for a service and new battery a couple of weeks ago. Apparently it needs some work and parts are not available in the UK. :(

There's some nice time-pieces in this thread, food for thought until old faithful returns... working or not.

I find it interesting that Nige feels the need to wear a watch on each arm. :shake:

That's seriously cool. I'd love to see him doing a refinish as well.

Been a hectic weekend for me. News arrived on Friday that the local TAG Boutique (yeah, what's that all about, but that's what a TAG shop in the UK is called) had lost my 34 year old 1000 professional after it had been left in their "safe" hands for a service. The result of our discussions this Tuesday mean that I will be getting a brand spanking new Carrera Heuer Calibre 01 once the compensation is agreed by TAG head office - which the manager assures me is a formality.

So, this

is being replaced by this

At the end of the day nothing can really replace the 1000, it was my 21st birthday pressie and hasn't been off my wrist since other than when it's been in for a service. Fortunately they knew how much they'd screwed up so hopefully also going to get a pair of Heuer Senna shades off them too.

The Carrera Cal 01 is pretty much a Hublot rip off but I think it looks good (and it does look good on the wrist although I might have to wear short sleeves every time I put it on, it is a large lump of titanium and crystal for sure).

Nice upgrade but sentimentally it sucks. Wicked looking watches both of them but the new one is crazy :)

Excellent. As far as I can see it's a modified 1887 movement. Which is pretty much the only TAG movement I think is worth the price, being essentially an in-house movement rather than a mass produced ETA. Did you get to pick the watch? Personally I like a more simple design, so I'd be going after a more vanilla 1887, but that's entirely subjective, and actually worth less monies. But if you do feel the same way, maybe you could negotiate a bit. Really sucks about your old watch though.

You're absolutely right about the movement Dex and the fact that it's in-house was part of the decision. Before heading over to the "boutique" I spent a fair bit of time looking at alternatives in preparation for any offers that might come up. I'd been looking at pics of the 01 for a while anyways, I just liked the look of it. Basically the manager said to take a look around the shop and see what I fancied. I tried on a few a models but actually having one of the 01's in my hands and on my wrist sold me.

It isn't a straight swap as the 01 costs quite a bit more than the valuation of my 1000 but there is a significant reduction on the 01, I'm basically paying about 20% of the retail price. I have to hand it to TAG to be honest, they knew how much they had screwed up and weren't trying to minimise their loss. They've been good to me.

The old girl will be missed and for the next few months I will be scouring any auction sites in case she pops up.

Yeah it's pretty good of them to basically give you a pick. You've definitely requested a quality time piece there.

An 1887 is on my 'one day' list.

Johnny, how often did you get your old TAG serviced, or was it due to some kind of damage?

I ask because I had my Aquaracer serviced soon after I inherited it, since it probably spent the best part of 6 years in its box and it was 15s/day fast. That was 3 yrs ago. I'm wondering if it's time for it to go back.

EDIT - nevermind! I just saw your earlier post that it was going in for a battery and service. Mine's an auto, so different rules apply I guess.

The battery in the 1000 used to last around 5 years, believe it or not, so I always got a service done whenever the watch went for a battery change. The watch also spent three days in a starch slurry tank when I used to work in the paper industry and seeing as how they wouldn't let me drop the starch tank to retrieve it and I had to wait until that batch was used up :( It survived that but it did need the odd repair during service on the couple of occasions it went back to Switzerland after that.

If you want to keep the aquaracer in tip top condition, as it's value is only going to increase, then it's worth getting a service done every few years. Depends how much you use it and the conditions it's subjected to.

I would suggest that it's worth looking at, Cursed. After 3 years it's worth while having a general services/oil, gaskets etc checked.

On reflection. I would think if that happened here, the service company would suggest that while it's a tragedy that the watch was lost. There is really nothing we can do. We can, however, offer you a new watch at no discount what so ever, and you should thank us for it.

I don't think that would be the case at all. You'd at the very least be given something of equal value.

There's a little more to it than TAG just upping and giving me a quite expensive watch for next to nothing. The circumstances under which the watch disappeared are somewhat cloaked in darkness. I asked a lot of questions about the courier and why it seemed so difficult to track down which was met with some evasive answers. As were questions regarding the guy I dealt with when I took the watch in who suddenly wasn't an employee within a day or two of the watch arriving back in the UK There's something fishy about the whole story I got from them and they seemed to just keep apologising, and were pushing that they felt they needed to compensate for the sentimental loss. At the end of the day I let them go as far as I could get away with, serves them right in my eyes.

Also, by staying with TAG they seem to think that they'll still have my business when to services etc. The new one will be going to the TAG dealers in Leeds if anything needs doing to it.

There's a Swedish watch-company called Corniche, anyone that has ordered from them? I really like the design, but kind of wanna know if how the quality and shipping is percieved.

I've never ordered from them so I can't comment on their service. But the guts of it is a Citizen Quartz movement. I just can't justify spending anything more than about $100 on a battery watch. It's depends I guess if you value styling over movement. You're paying for the styling of that watch. For that price you could grab a Seiko SARB033/34 that some of us have bought. The moment in that is on par with most of the Swiss ETA movements that you find in $2000-4000 watches.
