Re: Man points
I'm unsure whether I earned some man points or not this weekend.
The rear section on the Celica's exhaust has rusted through so I ordered a replacement and picked it up first thing Saturday morning. I got the car up on axle stands and then spent most of the morning trying to get the old one off. The rubber hangers were absolutely rock hard and not moving at all, so the thing wasn't moving at all.
Then it suddenly occurred to me that I had spent well over an hour trying to get the exhaust off without damaging the hangers, which are worth less than a fiver.
I decided to do the sensible thing - sacrifice them and buy replacements. After multiple failed attempts with knives, I eventually got them off with a hacksaw and fitted the new exhaust. New rubbers on, exhaust in place, line up with the middle pipe and fit the gasket.
Oh, the gasket doesn't fit. Turns out the shop had given me the exhaust for the 140bhp Celica which has a smaller pipe than the 190bhp one.
I had to get back under the car tonight to get that one off, so I can take it back for a refund.
I think the loss of many knuckles is worth some man points, but maybe this is countered for not checking the bloody thing before I started, and also for trying to save £4.50 on the rubber hangers.

Not checking the parts before starting is standard man procedure.

You didn't just win your class though, you caned them. By nearly 6sec per run over 2nd in class.

Re: Man points
I changed a leaking tap.
And it was a hot tap which involved careful analysis of the piping system to figure out how to prevent the hot water tank refilling. Analysis that quickly went out the window when I started and realised there was a second pipe and tap I hadn't spotted.
Anyway, it was a success so I reckon that's worth a couple of man points.

Re: Man points
Renting robs me of man point opportunities. Not allowed to do any household repairs :/ I need to look at building something.

I've rewired a few light switches. Does that count?
Oh, and replaced a bathroom ceiling fan, too.

I've decided to make my own knife from scratch. That's gotta be manly right?

Re: Man points
Feeling inspired by Primative Tech's forge blower, or is that a bit too "from scratch"?

Re: Man points
Yeah, a little bit too from scratch indeed. That guy is awesome though.
Actually it's not even that scratchy since I'll be buying a lot of the bits and pieces to make the handle. Brass pins etc. But essentially, gunna buy a small sheet of steel, shape it, grind it, and heat treat it using a blow torch. Also need to get a decent wet stone.

I blew an engine last weekend as superkarts, so stripped the top end off, awaiting the cylinder lining to be redone to put the engine back together

While the donk was out, did you stand around with a beer, talking to a mate, while looking at it?

Anything that involves breaking an engine before getting it working again is definitely worth lots of man points.

Re: Man points
I've just thought of something that might be worth a single man point. I've recently been weeding our patio with a flame-thrower.
We can't use chemicals because of the dog, and everything in our back garden grows so bloody fast that we don't have time rip them them out by hand.
Burning them with fire was the only solution.

Re: Man points
I've racked up quite a few in recent months with the new car, new head unit and speakers in the front doors and dash, front and rear facing dash cams. Bushes for the rear sub frame and diff mounts, camber bolts in the front. Installed new suspension front and back, removed said suspension, changed springs and reinstalled. Detailed exterior a few times applying a ceramic coating the last time so I won't have to do that one again for a long time.
Probably a year ago now but using 8020 designed and put together a mount for my sim pedals to securely attach them to the cockpit.
To be honest man points aren't usually my strong suit but I can and do earn them when needed or when I want to

Flame throwering your weeds is definitely cool, but I'm pretty sure that regular weed killer like round up is perfectly safe for dogs - just give it an hour or two to dry up to be overly cautious.durbster wrote:I've just thought of something that might be worth a single man point. That's worth a hell of a lot more than a single point.durbster wrote:I've just thought of something that might be worth a single man point. I've recently been weeding our patio with a flame-thrower.
