1/20 scale 1992 B192 Benetton Ford

So I bought quite a lot of stuff. I haven't yet grabbed a rally car, but I thought this would be a challenging and fun build. I haven't built a model since I was a kid, and I've never used an air brush before. It's going to be a steep learning curve I reckon, but I'm pretty determined to learn, and take my time. I spent about two hours today priming and painting some of the engine.

















Progress so far. I haven't yet fired up the air brush, the engine is just primed with a spray can, and some matte silver hand brushed. It needs a second coat. I'll post progress along the way, hopefully I don't completely fuck it up.

Nice work Dex - if I could give one recommendation it would be to get some super glue and use that primarily. I use Sellys from a small blue bottle but there are numerous other brands in hobby shops.
I squirt a little on an old CD and then apply it with a toothpick. It will save you a ton of time and is a lot cleaner, and is also a very good filler for seams and the like.

Jiminee it's better than using the plastic cement?

Plastic cement melts the plastic. That's how it joins pieces together, by welding them. Use too much and it ruins things. With super glue, it's only the glue sticking the bits together. If you have a thin super glue you can run it down the seems as Jiminee said and it doubles as a gap filler. It's really handy for leading edge wing joints on aircraft. But some kits need a gap filler like putty as the fit can be bad.

I built that Benetton over 20 years ago haha. I'd love to have the time to go back and build them again properly. Look forward to watching the build progress, Dex.

That's how I feel about the planes I built as a kid. Although I'm sure I'll feel the same way about this model after a few more. I guess you have to practice on something.

Keep us posted Dex, I love making my models vs die casts. I spent 3 months painstakingly detailing my 1:10th Williams FW14B and my Ferrari 312T.
I use to have a fair few 1:20th's, that Benetton included but as I was only about 12 they got played with lol.

As time went on I bought a few 1:18th die casts but would love to magically find the time to finish off the two McLaren MP4/4 and MP4/5 that im about half way thru customising all the plumbing and wiring looms as I built it. Pain to make sure the engine cover still fits as you go but oh so worth it when you are done.

That specimen the Dr posted is outstanding.

Best thing about super glue is speed - glue, squeeze and done.
The model glue can get stringy and messy. Just about everyone I know has moved away from it but it has its place - when some fine tuning is required for example, the super glue does not give you any room for error.

Use to use it all the time to cut down on drying time. Makes paint the longest waiting element when building.

And in summer with Tamiya spray cans even that is only a couple of hours!

I've had one of these bad boys for an age now. Lost count how many times I stabbed my finger with the damn needle. But my compressor is too old and too noisy so I will need an update if I get back into kit building again.

The guy at the hobby shop seemed to swear by the compressor I bought. Said he's had it running all day every day for years now. But then do you trust a salesman? I'm pretty skeptical after being one myself.

I have that very same compressor and have had it for close to 15 years now. I hardly ever use it (but I will one day). But, every time I do need it it just fires up without issue... I have never done anything to maintain or service it.

Good to know. I paid just under $200 but seems you can find them online a bit cheaper.

One other thing Dex - be careful about what paints you mix with others. Tamiya spray cans and enamels for example do not get along though the primer is (should be?) fine.
Apologies if this is stating the obvious but things can get messy.

That's strange. The kit lists two Tamiya sprays (which I bought) along with the enamels. Perhaps the areas using the sprays don't ever get painted over on the same areas... if that makes sense?
