I was a little surprised that my IT guy had not heard of 'mobo' - it's not obscure terminology is it?

Maybe in the 3rd grade indian support education it is. (actually, indian support isn't that bad, this must have been something else)

Nope, its a pretty common slang term for the motherboard I thought, pretty much the default.

I always referred to the mobo as the backbone.

When i just started out studying IT, it was support like this that made me realise Id be able to cut it no worries!
