Dignity, at last

Post by Dr. Pain »

Euthanasia will legal from mid 2019 in Victoria.

This is not a place to debate this or celebrate so please don't go down that path. My pop died from dementia in 1990 and you would not wish that upon your worse enemy. I wish he had this so he could have gone with dignity, although he may not have been of sound mind, I hope there is room for compassion in this.

We can put down our pets if they are unwell, but we cant help our loved ones die with dignity, til now in Vic. Kudos to the Victorian government.

Why are they waiting until 2019?

To set up all the guidelines & processes around it & the typical bureaucratic timetable to implement it.

Stupid churchies opposed to it. See so much pain and suffering at work, makes me sad that common sense is taking so long to come through.

Wow, I didn't know this was happening.

My Gran has dementia and it's been awful to watch her deteriorate slowly over the last few years, to the point where she now barely recognises her own daughter. It's a life nobody would choose so I've been thinking about this a lot recently.

Although I would have loved a few more years with my Dad, I know he would never have wanted to end up anything like that. In his final days before Cancer finally took him down, he said he felt pretty lucky for having the opportunity able to say good bye to all his friends, and to make sure everything was in place for my Mum.

I know what kind of exit I'd want, if I had the choice.

I think this is a small, positive step. It isn't yet the right to decide your exit on your own terms; it's a right to ask a group of people for their permission that you can have someone help you out the door because last drinks have been called.
