Batten down the Hatches
And stay safe towards the end of this week & over the weekend, if you're in the South East of Australia.

Fuck it would be great to be part of a profession where it is completely normal to be wrong 80% of the time and you are considered a genius to be wrong a mere 7 out of 10 times....

it depends on how you define "wrong" :PJamo wrote:Fuck it would be great to be part of a profession where it is completely normal to be wrong 80% of the time and you are considered a genius to be wrong a mere 7 out of 10 times....
Technically, I guess, I'm in a profession where I am wrong 100% of the time.

The Adelaide bureau is atrocious most of the time with its rain forecasts... They seem pretty confident we will get a good downpour on Friday tho.

I remember how, on my first trip to the US, I was amazed at the accuracy of their weather predictions. How they predicted temperature and events to the hour of the day. They seemed to be pretty spot on most of the time. Then I wondered why they seemed to be so-so here - the science is the same, they learn the same lessons and use a lot of the same equipment. The only thing I could conclude is that our physical circumstances just make it harder to predict. Maybe its the combination of antarctic freezer to the South, the oceans all around and a big, hot fucking desert. I doubt smarts has much to do with it. What's more, I think they get it right a lot more often than I remember it when I was a kid.

It is that Cursed. It's the combo of the Southern ocean and how hot our land mass gets that makes it tough to predict.

Globally changing climatic conditions probably aren't helping things either on the weather prediction frontDr. Pain wrote:It is that Cursed. It's the combo of the Southern ocean and how hot our land mass gets that makes it tough to predict.

No they are not. But weather in the Southern Ocean has time to build power as there's hardly any land to hit besides Australia and South America.

It's funny up here I never check the weather, it's the same everyday basically, hot with a chance of afternoon thunderstorms this time of year or sunny and dry during the middle of the year. I notice whenever I visit the family in Melbourne they're always checking the forecast trying to work out what's going to happen.

Re: Batten down the Hatches
Predicting temperature is pretty easy and is often used as a yardstick. Predicting exactly where will get how much rain is not so easy.
This event is a good example. Yes it's going to rain in Victoria and possibly a lot. Most places will range between 20 mm and 200! The BoM will rightly err on the side of caution and over predict to prepare people.
The advantage in America is the concentration of weather stations. A forecast is greatly improved if there is a weather station for that location. In some parts of Australia they are 500km apart!
Yes the forecasts are getting better and our error margin is dropping, but no, it will never be perfect so people will always be able to trott out comments like Jamos!

Come to the tropics and you'll learn what rain is all about
Granted it was a record wet last year but one day in Feb this year we got 210mm
To be fair we're probably a bit better setup to handle high rainfall with drainage and things.

Nothing today and the 5-10mm forecast for Saturday has been downgraded to 1mm. Anything longer than 24hours seems to be guess work.
