People are spending ridiculous amounts on virtual ships, merchandise and other crap when they don't have any way of knowing if those ships will be any good in the final game. Imagine the reaction if iracing/Kunos/ISI charged $1000 pre-order for a "limited edition" car with no fixed release date.
Heh, like iR needs more ideas to generate funding...but it's a good one! ;)

I agree that this (sc) has got out of hand a bit. (a lot) But if they receive what they perceive as value for money, then it's all good.

Developer says the Star Citizen client is expected to be 100Gb!
As I have already said, I would not count on this. The game compression and asset removal is unlikely to yield such high gains that we will be able to reduce our client size to 30-40gb. The size and number of assets that are left to deliver means that our client size is much more likely to be 100gb.

1.1 just got released and you can now earn currency in Arena Commander to rent ships and upgrades.

It requires a full reinstall though :(

I'm sorry, I don't understand this Star Citizen buying ship malarkey, they still want money to buy ships ($90-300USD) and test them? Just make the fucking game already, I reckon they might have enough money to do it!

You only have to buy one. $30USD is the cheapest option but you don't get early access. $45 if you want that. It'll work like ED once the MMO part of the game is running and IIRC you won't be able to buy ships with real money from that point on.

Arena Commander is an early access component which is a bit like doing combat in a RES, but with a limited area you can fly in. This update lets you earn credits doing that which you can use to get temporary access to other content since it only applies to this module.

It is a bit much to keep selling new ships when they already have so much money but I guess we'll get to see what sort of game can be made with a basically unlimited budget.

EDIT: Seems they've got a long way to go to get to the top. I think they'd be 16th or 15th now.

The money you have giving to them is for the development.

You do not need to pay anything, and can just wait till it gets released and build up creds and buy them then.

I think that's what I'll end up doing wobbly, I'm feeling the burn of early access again of late, Elite was fun for a short time and got boring pretty quickly in its current state, I don't mind the idea of early access to give the developer a bit of a leg up and I've bought a few early access games lately which may or may not pan out, but RSI certainly don't need my money at this point, or money from any other sources in my opinion.

The way folks have thrown great wads of money at them make them a great candidate for wasteful business practices and it wouldn't surprise me if in a couple of years they come up with some story about how they've run out of money and need more to finish the project because they didn't anticipate the work required to make their ambition a reality. Geez I am a cynical bastard these days! :D

An interesting albeit rather long read from another developer that believes SC will run out of coin before it's finished and won't be released. If you can get past him pushing his own cart he makes a lot of valid points.

And RSI's response, terminate his backing and refund his money.

After nearly 3 years and 70+ Million in additional funding beyond the initial KickStarter i'd be asking questions as well.

Yep, I think SC is at the bullshit stage. Last time i tried to play it i couldn't even get my controls mapped properly and Trackir was moving your head around inside the helmet - useless.
