A larger turbo restrictor (increased to 36mm from 33mm) so power goes up to 380bhp from about 300bhp. The cars use 1.6L direct injection turbo engines.

Reduction in minimum weight by 25kg.

Wider track allowed.

More freedom on aerodynamic appendages leading to wilder rear wings, wheelarch winglets and ducting. The regs no longer prohibit underfloor aerodynamics so the new cars have sprouted side skirts and diffusers.

The re-introduction of electronic centre diffs.

So the cars will be significantly faster. The WRC promoters are making a big deal of these cars being a "return to Group B", which is total bullshit. Although the cars will be faster, they won't necessarily be more spectacular because the combination of centre diff and aerodynamics will ensure that the fastest way to drive them will be as straight as possible. If they really wanted to make the cars spectacular, they should have removed most aero, removed the restrictor altogether, mandated a solid centre diff and made the cars run on Bob Jane All-Rounders.

Anyway, the really interesting part of this year will be to see how the teams and drivers stack up: VW has withdrawn so Ogier is now driving for M-Sport (Ford), the new Toyota team (with Team Principal Tommi Makinen) has landed Latvala so expect bits of Yaris to be strewn around the globe, Citroen took a year off working on the new car so this is Kris Meeke's best chance for a title, and Hyundai seem to have a solid contender too.

If they want a return to Group B they'll also have to relax the spectator restrictions.

Or made them RWD and run the Bob Jane All-Rounders...

I watched this last night, it's the whole race from onboard with Grice at the old Adelaide International Raceway. It's interesting to watch how his Yokohamas lost their edge after a few laps but held on there after over the full race and he started to make back some time on the others. He also has a good scrap with Perkins who led early but his Dunlops went off even more and they have a little incident in the second half while scrapping. There's a couple of crosses to the commentary team too but you can only just hear Grice talking to someone, most likely Mike Raymond.

Although somber this is a well put together production. In some way it also shows how we, as humans have changed over the decades on how death is seen & treated particularly in Motorsport.

Crazy with that F1 video that there were stacks of deaths and then like a massive gap before Jules Bianchi died. It shows how far track and car safety has come.

Kris Meeke did his best to lose Rally Mexico: shortly before the end of the last stage he took a tour through a spectator carpark:

But he still managed to win...
