Didn't see that coming....

Brendon Hartley will make his Formula 1 debut for Toro Rosso at the United States Grand Prix at Austin.

The New Zealander has been drafted in as replacement for Frenchman Pierre Gasly, who will be competing in the Super Formula finale in Japan instead.

Hartley has fallen off the F1 radar in recent years and focused on sportscar racing, and was the 2015 World Endurance champion with Porsche.

He previously tested for Toro Rosso back in 2009.

That's awesome. Thought he might not get the gig with his possible tie with Indy Car for next year but it looks like the stars have aligned. Hope he does well and gets another shot if this round yeilds a promising result.

It shows how much Red Bull have cut back funding new drivers. They only really have Gasly and Gelael to pick from at the moment and Gelael isn't ready. Clearly their intention is to sell Torro Rosso off soon and then RBR some time after.

Real bombshell that news! Cant wait, will be the first time I have ever seen a Kiwi in F1.

Not getting my hopes up to high for a big result, tough ask jumping into the car when hes hasn't driven a F1 car for 5 years or something silly like that.

Fernando Alonso will continue to drive for McLaren in Formula 1 next year.

The 36-year-old's new "multi-year" contract means he will stay with the team in F1 at least in 2018.

(mind you he had nowhere else to go except out of F1)

True. With LMP 1 dying it's F1 or home.

Red Bull Racing has announced a contract extension for Max Verstappen, which will see the Dutch driver remain with the team until the 2020 Formula 1 season.

Interesting. I thought he would be looking to leave but maybe he's thinking DannyRic will go and that then makes him number 1 driver at RBR (instead of being number 2 to Vettel or Hamilton).

Wow did not expect that.. Really thought he would sit and wait to see what happens with Bottas/Kimi and take one of those spots.

I do wonder if this means Danny to Ferrari might happen

Makes me think that Kvyat has the seat for next year and they are using the opportunity to test the other blokes to find the best candidate for the 2nd seat. That, or it'll be a completely new line up at STR next year.

I guess as Kvyat's contract is with Red Bull they can do what ever they like whilst he is driving one of their cars.

If I was Kyvat, I'd say get stuffed to F1 & find a career driving another type of racecar.

I agree. He's never going to be F1 world champion. He's not good enough. Better to move on now and find something else I think.

I think he'd earn more money as an F1 seat filler than anywhere else he could go. Unlikely to ever be champion, but as a job it doesn't seem all that bad. Apart from his employer being a bit shitty.

Crazy to think he's still only 23.

He'd get paid at Torro Rosso, but probably have to pay to go elsewhere.
