There hasn't been too many races I've missed since 1991, mostly the early morning races I forgot to record, but this morning with 15 laps to go I went to bed. I was finding it very boring. The first half of the race I was fine then yawn. Japan was the last full race I've watched and I haven't missed it at all.

I woke up on the couch... So boring it sent me to sleep.

That new logo... Of all the things in need of change or improving in the sport, it wasnt one of them.
I get the fact the new owners want to put their stamp on there new shiny toy but changing such an iconic brand logo is one of their few bad decisions.

Reading thru their Facebook account on the logo change. The F1 FB account's comment stream is always about as good as YouTube comments on any given video but, this one made me laugh.
Stupid Yanks couldn't understand the now old logo so it has been dumbed down in a manner of speaking. To change it is one thing but to piss off most of the sports' loyalists and choose a poor design. Well done Liberty Media, you manage to out do yourself at the US GP with that pathetic driver introduction you absolute fuckwits

I would have never got this.
F1's marketing head Ellie Norman said the design of the logo was based on two cars going around a circuit and battling for the finish line.
It takes inspiration from the low profile shape of the car, two cars crossing a finish line," she said.

It has been a while since we have seen that on the last lap.

I don’t think it’s as bad as what some are saying. It actually looks a bit better on black with ‘FIA Formula 1 world championship’ or what ever it is written under it.

But I still prefer the old logo, and it’s become somewhat iconic. If you look at some of the most recognisable brands out there, most stay with it regardless of how it’s aged.

Hamilton was overheard in the Room of Awkwardness after the race that they really need to change the layout.

That's exactly what some of the drivers said too, Ham and Vet said you wouldn't change the Merc or Ferrari logos. But apparently a lot of people never saw the '1' in the negative space and they can't easily use it in digital media because of the spikes on the right but surely you just put the whole thing inside a box and then it's fine!

Liberty have done a lot of good so far but this isn't one of them I think.

It's not the layout of the track but what the championship is at this moment. The technology is awesome but if teams can't get their power delivery right then you're screwed. We've gone from an aero formula to an engine formula. I think the engines need to reflect real life as in what we had up to 2013. Find a way to simplify the current hybrid system. I don't mind one team dominating but it's all so hamstrung these days at cutting costs and we know they haven't cut costs at all. They just spend it elsewhere on other things.

Yeah, there’s always been clear leaders of the pack... but the difference seemed to be that you’d have a changing of the guard... a team would get it right soon enough and you’d see a new team taking over the number one spot. With all the regulations on engine development, tokens etc, cap on spending, and restrictions on testing, it seems like those behind stay behind a lot longer. It took years for RBR to get knocked off their perch, and even longer by the look of it for anyone to catch Merc.

Was reading about the rationale for the new 'rl' logo yesterday and it struck me that in some forms of social media the extreme italic font hampers its implementation into a circle avatar icon.
"It is incredibly bold and simple, so as we apply this in today's market and being mobile and digital led, we have much more flexibility and versatility with this logo.
Take Facebook for example which is probably has their largest social footprint. They have had to shift the logo down in the square profile pic to make it not crop when Facebook implements it into the circle that we all see in the feed. This seems to be a compromise to ensure its maximum size given it seriously lacks height in the actual logo.

Image

Seems like a bit of a end use oversight to me. I know this is only one use case example but these are the kinds of details that are usually front of mind when designing for the digital space. Seeing it not central in the avatar keeps doing my OCD in, I cant unsee it now... :p

New logo rationales should be released as novels... they're just agencies with lots of lube.
My favourite one from the new Foxtel logo, It's an open book, the audience will imbue it with meaning...

Interestingly they got it right on their Twitter account by downsizing it a little and squaring it up within the circle.
