I link them through photobucket, but that still might be a bit more load intensive than imgur, never really checked.
It does not matter where they are (unless the source is crap). It's just that when they're full images, all data has to be downloaded. Whereas if they're thumbnails, you save a lot of data download (if they're real, properly resized images, not just ones resized via javascript on client side).

As far as I can make out that's Jackie Stewart in the 1967 Tyrrell F2 car. But in that year he only raced it at Snetterton, Silverstone, Jarama, Autodromo di Pergusa and Brands Hatch.
