Been a few years since F5000 were on the supports at the GP? I hope this series gets up and going and on the bill.

my dad always said the most spectacular thing he's every seen in racing was a full field of F5000's barreling down towards turn 1 at Phillip Island.

F1 would love that engine cover from a sponsorship point of view.

Memories of watching Frank Matich winning the AGP at Warwick Farm in the early '70's, drivers like KB, Max Stewart, Graeme McCrae, Warwick Brown, ahh glory days loved the F5000

That airbox is meant to look like a Lola T-332 from the 1970s.
I reckon they'd have to change the engine specs. The old F5000 engines would be very hard to get spares for. One Australian team in the late 70s even started developing a flat plane crank. I think it was Elfin, who also built the only true ground effect F5000 car, the MR-9.

Spec series with specs to be frozen for 4 years. They expect the InnoV8 engine (which is developed from the Coyote) to be good for 10,000km before a rebuild.

Better than Formula Holden or whatever our current open wheel series is.

Re: Formula Thunder 5000
Formula Holden, now there's a blast from the past, that hasn't been around for about 10 years. CAMS are doing their best(and failing) at pushing F4 onto everyone. I think this year's field is now down to 7. They fucked over Formula Ford in favour of F4 and it's not going well. F3 had a slight resurgence but isn't really the strongest category.
Even with F5000 our junior drivers are going to be very limited when it comes to open wheelers. I think F5000 will be an older gents category instead of a feeder series.

Re: Formula Thunder 5000
Ah, Frank Matich, I met him when I did a large job for him back in the late 80's early 90's I think it was. The job took forever because Frank was always on for a chat, loads of stories. Some I took with a grain of salt in the telling, but accepted his genuine belief in the underlying truth - like his part in Bell's development of the first full-face helmet. It seems Frank has to compete with Dan Gurney and Bell's marketing department for this credit. Perhaps they shared it, Dan for the impetus and Frank for the engineering. He also had a very impressive trophy cabinet in the reception area of his business, as I remember.macca wrote:Memories of watching Frank Matich winning the AGP at Warwick Farm in the early '70's, drivers like KB, Max Stewart, Graeme McCrae, Warwick Brown, ahh glory days loved the F5000

Re: Formula Thunder 5000
I have read that a minimum age of 18 willl be in place so definitely not a feeder series.

Re: Formula Thunder 5000
From the Q&A article
Onto the Sporting side, the first thing people might think is, will CAMS try to stop this?
A couple of people did! But to be fair, they have been really good. We approached them late last year and outlined what we were doing. We did not seek any full-on CAMS National Championship status or CAMS category name. Our proposal was to run these cars under the generic ‘Formula Libre’ regulations and then see where it goes. It went through the Australian Motor Racing Commission and then the Board, and then I got a very nice email back, saying, ‘Good on you for the initiative’, and agreeing to that straightforward scenario.
So does that mean that CAMS does not see any crossover or interference with Formula 4?
None. In talking to them, we stressed that this is nothing to do with any junior formulae. The same with TRS in New Zealand; I don’t think anyone much over 18 races in TRS, and the same with F4. In fact, we maintain this complements those formulae; not everyone who comes out of F4 has the resources or the motivation to go overseas and so a serious Australian open-wheeler series, with close racing among cars that take a bit of driving, might well appeal to them. We also expect to interest more experienced drivers, both here and overseas.
