Seems all but one driver has forgotten about using karting lines to find more grip. It was strange to watch.

Thats what I was thinking watching the race and listening to a few post race podcasts when they were talking up his amazing outside passing.

Would you blokes say he didn't really have anything to lose?

I'm not trying to take anything away from his performance :)

I didn't watch it so my opinion is pretty much invalid. From whats been said he was on good tyres and no one else was? On the other end of the spectrum I've seen sites comparing his drive to that of Senna and Schumacher in the wet. Sounds like it could be a bit of a stretch.

Well he smashed Dan's performance and they were on the same age tyres.

I was surprised he was the only one taking those lines too. Remember Alonso in Hungary - you'd think the others would give it a go.

To be fair Riccardo was on tyres of a very similar degradation and Verstappen made him look pretty ordinary. But the RedBulls were on the newest tyres out of the field.

Like Darren said, its like 99% of the drivers have forgotten how to drive the wet conditions, sticking the the drying line and not hunting for the grip on the courser tarmac. Verstappens drive was outstanding so dont get me wrong, but when you are the only bloke remembering the fundamentals of wet weather driving it shows the others up pretty quickly.

Ricciardo also had a fogged up helmet for most of the race.

The so called 'karting line' is not always the quickest. Unless the track has seen extended use over the weekend and has a heap of rubber down on the main line, there isn't really an advantage to the outside lines. Max just looked like a god because he had newer tyres on.

Agreed, pretty sure most F1 drivers can work out the best line available.

I thought Pirelli were staying mum on the tyre stats.

I just watched the race and Max was on fire! Very impressive. The last 10 laps was amazing.

The same tyres Ricciardo was on...

That's hilarious! I'd take this bloke over the English team and I don't even speak 'freaky deaky dutch'

The kid is no Gilles Villeneuve, if his car control is so great he wouldn't have lost it in the first place. Nice recovery though.

There's a poll up for best wet drive of all time, Senna @ Donington in 1993 only has 8%, Hamilton @ Silverstone in 2008 has 41% of the vote.

I know what I voted for

JYS was a mere Student to the Master.

When = 1963
Where = Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps.
Weather = Extreme Wet, Foggy and Slippery Conditions.
What = After suffering gearbox problems in Practice and starting from eighth on the grid Clark passed all of the cars in front of him, including racer-leader Graham Hill on the first lap and by the end of it had a lead of over 10 seconds. It seemed more as many where convinced the rest of the field had been wiped out in an accident, he was so far ahead. Spectactors and teams alike.

After 17 laps of the race, with the rain coming down harder than ever, Clark had lapped the entire field. He later let 2nd place man Bruce McLaren back through, Clark had backed off in his typical modest way as he did not want to rub it in.
That being said he crossed the line almost five minutes ahead of McLaren's Cooper.

Richard Seaman might have been on the list too for Spa 1939 in a Mercedes Benz W154. He was leading the race by some way but had a nasty off on lap 22, it was damn wet. He died in hospital. The only non German to drive those pre war Mercs.

He was know as Dick Seaman

I watched a show about him oh a good 10 years ago. He had to move to Nazi Germany to drive for the team.
