RIP John Surtees

Post by Big Kev »

:(

Former Formula 1 and motorcycling world champion John Surtees has died at the age of 83, his family has announced.

Surtees is the only man to have won the grand prix world championship on both two wheels and four. He won four 500cc motorcycling titles - in 1956, 1958, 1959 and 1960 - and the F1 crown with Ferrari in 1964.

He was being treated for an existing respiratory condition, a family statement said.

Aww. He was immortalised in GPL. I didn't know much about him before I got into that but seemed a great bloke, and nobody's going to beat having world championships on two and four wheels.

RIP

He was an absolute bloody legend!

He's record for 350CC and 500CC across 1958 to 1960 is staggering. 32 wins from 39 races, 6 of the were Isle of Man wins.

It's amazing that he survived both motorcycle and car racing during it's most dangerous era and died from natural causes, yet his son died from one of the only ways you can in the safest era of motor racing.

A sporting legend like no other that is for sure & every interview I have seen of him, he has seemed to be a true gentleman & a very humble human being.
