Walt Disney has announced a deal to make three new Star Wars movies.

The company said it had struck a deal with Rian Johnson, director of the upcoming "Star Wars: The Last Jedi", to create a new trilogy of the science fiction blockbuster.

Disney is also working on a live-action Star Wars series for a new online streaming service.

So we have two more in the ‘regular’ movie series to come, and I take it two more spin offs, the Han Solo one, and whatever else, and now there’s another trilogy? And a TV show... starting to get hard to follow haha. I’m also wondering if it’s going to stop feeling special when a new Star Wars thing comes out.

I must admit I worry that they could dilute the franchise if they over do it. But at the same time I'm super excited.

Similar to the Marvel stuff. I've given up on that cos I can't follow how all the films join together.

Red Letter Media made a valid point: the Star Wars "universe" - as in, building one from the original trilogy - is actually going to be bloody tough because there's actually not a whole lot to go on when you think about it. Star Wars was not some vast, complex, layered world like Lord of the Rings, it was a pretty straightforward space adventure film with a simple goodie vs. baddie plot.

Considering they've already spun one film out of a single line of dialogue (Rogue One), it'll be interesting to see just how far they can stretch such thin source material.

There is lore out there but it exists in things like games. I did play Star Wars The Old Republic and that happens 3600 years before the events in the movies.

It's much the same as what's been before and Satele Shan is main player in that period so they could pursue another major female roll. I have to say as a Sith in this game, I was a complete fucking arsehole as Darth Faark. Force lighning is an awesome tool to get what you want :D

They already built a vast universe with the original expanded universe that Disney has since consigned to "legend" status. There'll be no problem expanding what they have. What's more worrying is the mess they've had with the re-shoots on rogue one and now the mess with Solo. Oh, and the Boba Fett movie being canned.

To go slightly off topic, I got battlefront 2 and I really really like it. Rey could fight Darth Vader or Yoda against Kylo Ren ect... It's got hero's from different era's in it. But when I was watching a clip and the narrator was talking about artist content, both Disney and Lucas Arts have a strangle hold on it. It seems they are very anal about what goes into official content. Dice who develop the game said anything they make, even a cool looking skin has to go through Disney and Lucas and they feel it doesn't suit, it wont make it in. Any live action stuff would have the same constraints were as the animated stuff wont. This could be why we haven't seen much live action stuff beyond the movies.

The game is irrelevant in the thread GT, my post is more about the control of content the studio has affecting anything anyone tries to do with Star Wars.

Speaking of the Star Wars universe built by the fans, here's a Red Letter Media video that's not at all sarcastic about it:

It would be hell trying to make anything for these guys if they created all that just about a costume worn in a movie :yikes:

I'm not really anticipating this movie to be honest, I think maybe the criticisms of The Force Awakens have kinda discouraged me. I enjoyed it when I saw it in the cinema but have to admit a lot of the criticisms are valid. I haven't watched it again yet so I think I will have to and it may either get me in the mood again or kinda confirm my current feelings.

My biggest gripe with The Force Awakens is that it rendered everything that happened in the original films completely pointless. The empire was replaced by something far bigger and more destructive.

Maybe they'll acknowledge that and it'll be why Luke's now a hobo. :)

I'm avoiding reviews but it sounds like a superb 90 minute film is inside a 150 minute film, from what I've seen from Twitter. Inexplicably common with modern films.

I'm not sure how to feel. It was essentially a dark comedy. Unlike The Force Awakens I'm not in a hurry to watch it again. Some pretty important questions left over from the last one were either unanswered or glossed over like they weren't that important.

I've got the day off on Friday and there's a showing at the local cinema down the road at 8.30am! Sorely tempted to skip a lie in and go along. It's a slightly hefty £13 a ticket for 2D!! but only 7 pre-sold tickets, kids will be at school. 4 of the 7 sold seats are single ones. What a bunch of saddos....... oh wait! :D
