A question for the Rugby League experts

Post by Bauer »

Was watching the Broncos/Tigers game - I think it was Friday - and I watched a piece of play that I didnt understand. Hoping you can help and I hope I make sense. I dont begin to be an expert in the game but well and truly know enough to watch and enjoy.

There was a knock on ruled after a player lost control of the ball and it went to ground. This bit I understand but what happened in the next few seconds makes me ask the question.

When he lost control of the ball it bounced in front of him. Before it bounced a second time he put boot to ball and sent it through the uprights. The commentators joked about it being a field goal. ha ha ha and then pack the scrum. It was laughed off.

My question is to ask why it wasnt a field goal?

It met the criteria of a drop kick that would normally be done even though the intent was not there in the play.

So does a field goal attempt need to take place behind the original spot where the play started maybe?
Does the attempt need to be clearly signalled somehow during the play?

Any thoughts?

I refuse to watch that pack of labias on 9, but I am curious as to what they said?

I assume it was because it was unintentional. You cant drop the ball then have a stab at a field goal.

You need to kick the ball immediately after it hits the ground in "one action" for it to be a drop kick, and that's the only way to score a field goal.

The rule they put up on screen today made comment that to be considered a field goal the ball is to be kicked when it is in an upward motion after bouncing on the ground.

So rules are rules so I concede that if that is what the book says then the kick I saw did not comply as the ball was on the way back down.

But rules also say that Canadian men cant enter Miss Universe too.

Doesnt mean the rule is right if it means that someone with some quick thinking cant add to the spectacle :D I thought it was a fluke shot but quick thinking none the less if it was intended.

Clearly I wasnt the only one who asked the question and I bet plenty that asked know more than I do about League.

As a Wests Tigers supporter I feel it necessary to send them any medical bills I may incur for depression whilst watching them! They are so up and down (during the game) it is painful to watch sometimes.

However, our defensive effort was finally something bearable to watch! Broncos should have been up by 20+ at half time.

Still nice speed in 7s but would he be hit on a full 15 side.

Nope, not a chance. Not enough room to do what he is doing there.

lolzers. sif talk union in league threads

anyhoozen, why dont more teams utilise the 40/20 rule. Saw the Storm try it twice in a row today with 1 try and 1 oh so close to working. It isnt something I see week to week.
