New monitor time.

Post by richo »

Well my trusty old Dell 1920x1200 monitor died suddenly so the hunt is on for a new monitor , I'm leaning towards a 27" or a 29" more than likely a 27" 2560x1400 .

Any suggestions ?

Depends on cost I'd assume. Would another Dell be out of the question?

Dell has a special on the UltraSharp U2713H 27" at the moment. It's still $699 even with the 30% off.

Definitely go a 2560 x 1440 if you can afford one. I just bought a cheap Benq 27". While it's good for it's price, it's poor resolution is very apparent sitting next to the iMac 27". I only use it for extra desktop space for tools when editing etc, so does what I need, but for a primary monitor, try not to skimp on a cheapy.

Those Dells are good.

Are you gaming as well? If you do, take care and check if your video card can handle the high res monitor well (i.e. a full HD is ~2mpx but the 2.5K*1.4K is ~3.5m pixels - nearly double!)

Sorry if I was just stating the obvious. :)
Surprise, no sig. Now there is. Or is there?

Yes the Dell looks the goods and reasonably priced . My pc runs and i5-2500k, 8gb ram and two HD6970 video cards so I would hope it can run it but I won't know till I get it which is a risk.

Still good excuse for an update :)

And yes definitely gaming .

Now that you've said that R8 ........

Watching this thread with interest, my Dell 2707WFP has just started in the last few days to show unevenness in the back light, really only noticeable on solid colour backgrounds but it's probably a good indicator it's not long for this world.

I've got one of those old things, it's either 2407 or 08 but it's very old now...over 7 years, certainly. No problems apart form the dead dot - but it was there from the start.
The other two 2410's are going strong too, over 4 years now, so yeah, dell lives long enough. Although, maybe others do, too :)

I've got the same setup, ysu. A 2407 or something and 2 x 2410s. All still going well.

My 2709 died a couple weeks ago :(

I only used it as a secondary screen so I'll probably just get something cheap to replace it. The 2407 I had before it lasted about 5 years as well.

Sucks they're all still 60Hz. I can't go back to it for my main monitor after using a 120Hz screen.

If you want pixels there's also the samsung U28D590. 28" 3840 x 2160, but TN panel.

LOL, nice! There was a big sale on the 2410's in 2010, for ~450 where I got them - have you found that deal irresistible as well?

I honestly can't remember how much I paid for them. It was in 2010 though. I haven't done a single upgrade on my PC since. It's becoming a bit of a dinosaur...

whoa... :eyepop: I've full-upgraded twice, since, and replaced/added components probably another 2-3 times in between - mainly gfx cards.

My gaming PC was built in 2008. Still runs modern games fine somehow. Just not on full gfx. Upgrade will happen at tax time.

The only thing I'll add is if your thinking of going down the "ultra HD" type monitor, be prepared for everyday res monitors to look so, so crappy.

Everyday I turn up to work and use the 2x 1920x1200 24" monitors... ohh gawd the res is poopie, my freakin eyes! Then of course when I come home, ahhh yes... this looks so beautiful and super clear.

Order placed for the Dell 27 ultra sharp 2560x1400 . Reading reviews and the help you guys have given its the way to go . I do like the idea of the 29 incher as its sort of like multi monitors in one but bugger all supports the res natively .

Another thing to watch is that some monitors can not down rez well.
Some play it safe on the merry-go-round, others go for the thrills of the roller-coaster.

It's a damned if you do damned if you don't type of deal, I would like 120Hz too .

Looked at the 4K Samsung screen too and while it looks amazing it has ordinary inputs and only 60Hz .

Looking for a larger monitor at the moment. Got a 22" but thinking about 27" as the eyesight gets worse. Any advice on what features to focus on / best value monitors / good deals at the moment would be much appreciated.

Prolly only $500 or so. I will probably go with a fancy G-sync etc monitor when I get a new system next year (Oculus-ready), so really only looking for an adequate bigger monitor for now. I can cascade it down to other family members, so won't be wasted. Saw this one - any good?

First one, only has 1 x VGA, 1 x DVI Connectors

Second one is good is better, though not a fan of 1440res, as the up/downscaling of 1440 looks odd or you have bars.

What about bigger and help that eye sight along.... 39.5" and the best 4k monitor around, I have seen.. Tige.. higher then $500Usd though.. it does come with free shipping.
