Apple Watch
Announced today.
Available in early 2015, starting at US$349
To me the design is a bit clunky but then it is first generation. Zoom and scroll are controlled by the dial on the right. Great, assuming you don't wear it on the right wrist (like most left handers do) which means you would obscure the screen you're trying to scroll on. Some neat things like mapping that shows routes and vibrates differently for left and right turns to guide you. NFC for payments. News, weather, texts, tweets, etc as notifications.
Not so interested in the health apps, being able to send your pulse to a friend (WTF is that about), price, design and everything else really.

Re: Apple Watch
As far as looks go its pretty underwhelming in comparison to the Moto 360 and LG G Round. I really expected more from Apple in terms of hardware design.
Im sure it will sell well with the Apple faithful tho.
Im looking forward to Fossil and Intel teaming up and seeing what a traditional watch manufacturers take on a smartwatch will be.

Re: Apple Watch
That looks interesting Knappo. My beef with smart watches is they often look like they are trying a bit too hard.

Re: Apple Watch
I think clearly they've waited to see what the market was like before launching in to it but the design is a bit clunky to me. It looks very thick as well. I also don't get the point of a lot of the features. I still can't figure out why you would want to send someone your heartbeat. The freehand drawing instant message thing looks a bit pointless too. It'll be quicker to write a text.

Re: Apple Watch
Good question Dex. A watch that isn't waterproof is useless half the time (well, depending on where you live). That said, are any of the smartwatches waterproof? (edit: Sony and Pebble are)
I can't help thinking that battery technology means smart watches aren't going to take off yet. You need a reasonable chunk to fit enough battery in there just to last a day, so the design and functionality are compromised. They need to be as good as a traditional watch first and foremost, but with some connectivity, but what you have is something you have to switch on just to see the time, and then put on charge every night.
Then again, it's an Apple product so people aren't likely to view it objectively. It'll probably sell in droves.

Re: Apple Watch
the Moto X watch is only 320mAh, so it's going to struggle to even get through to the end of the day.

Re: Apple Watch
Apple haven't said anything about the battery yet but I wouldn't be surprised if it had to be charged every night.

Re: Apple Watch
I couldn't see it lasting more than a day. We need more development on solar glass.

Re: Apple Watch
Wireless charging would have mitigated the issue a bit because you could just take it off and chuck it next to your bed without much effort. I don't know if wireless charging requires a bigger device...?
It'll be very interesting to see how it sells.
Another issue with charging over night is that such a small battery will probably only take an hour at most to charge so it's potentially sitting there drawing power unecessarily for 7 hours.

Re: Apple Watch
The crown on most watches only serves to move the hands, which is not done very often on a good watch. And most people do it off their arm.DexterPunk wrote:Someone on a friends Facebook is whinging it's only for right handed people. How does this retard use a crown on any watch?

It does a bit more on the iWatch if I understand it properly. Which is a massive issue for lefties.

I'm pretty sure my left hand could operate a dial with no issues.

I know what you're getting at there, but it's hypothetical (if the dials were opposite side).norbs wrote:Have a think about it. Watch on right arm.DexterPunk wrote:I'm pretty sure my left hand could operate a dial with no issues.

Re: Apple Watch
There's an option to flip the display so it works for lefties.

Re: Apple Watch
Then if the display flipped, it would be at the bottom, and left handed people would be confused, and wouldn't know what to do.

Re: Apple Watch
Left handed people aren't as easily confused as iPhone people. There is a reason they only give the iPhone 1 button!DexterPunk wrote:Then if the display flipped, it would be at the bottom, and left handed people would be confused, and wouldn't know what to do.
