I read somewhere else this morning where Turnbull said this wouldn't affect VPNs due to there being nothing in copyright law in Australia that says it's illegal to use services that get around geoblocking to pay for content so sounds as though it's a non-story.

I've seen video of those words coming out of his mouth. Although, it wouldn't be unheard of for Turnbull to be forced to eat his words.

the amount of freakin times i've read this title as VPN for Norbs, grrr. Anyway i signed up to PIA as well and so far it's brilliant. There's a very simple app for connecting and choosing which server to connect to. So far my speeds and pings(22ms on speedtest.net) have been every bit as good as if i wasn't running through a VPN.

yep. I had a couple of copyright infringement notices from my ISP because my wife has been downloading NCIS. That's the main reason i'm using it now.

ok. Just going to throw this out there. I have NFI what I need and where to go to get it. I've been a little gun shy since the whole iiNet thing that went down a couple of weeks ago, but would like the ability to avoid the infringement notices (haven't had any - don't want to start). I want to acquire the shows the lady of the house likes to watch and well, I need F1 (whether stream or otherwise) as well as V8s etc. Is this something that PIA can help me with (allowing me to do all my bits and pieces on my PC, just hiding me behind a different IP), or have I got it wrong (again)? Would appreciate some help from any who has the time and the patience to explain/answer my stupid questions.

I was in the same position as you Matti, had no real idea what a VPN was until I saw this thread and started looking into it. PIA was really easy to set up. Once you've signed up you grab the installer, punch in your username and password and select the server location you would like.

Yeah I was the same as you guys... No real clue what I was doing. PIA was easy as. Gets great reviews and does what I need. $40 for the year is pretty cheap to give it a crack too.

I have my VPN service through Witopia and the question is how the hell do you port forward the thing considering every time you connect you get a new IP?

Doesn't make sense having the thing if downloads are as slow as a wet week.

Important - found my VPN had a Web RTC leak/ DNS leak. Express VPN helped sort it, but two things worth checking:

Go here: https://ipleak.net/ and if you see that "Your IP Address", "Your IP address – WebRTC detection" and "DNS Address detection" are showing your real IP Address, you need to play around with your VPN and/or router settings a bit more.

Hmm thanks for that. It found my ISP IP. I installed the plugin for chrome and all fixed. But do I still need to fiddle with anything else? I'd have no idea what i'd need to change.

The only other thing I did was turn off TCP/IPV6.

So, I've delved into the world of online privacy, mostly as it relates to my study and I'm just learning as much as I can and it has nothing to do with my underage midget beastiality porn addiction.

Thought I'd post the speeds I'm getting with:

Full governmentally exposed nakedness: 9ms / 30Mbps / 1.16Mbps
Righteous VPN provider (nearest location) : 23ms / 24Mbps / 1.11Mbps
Tor USB (take my data but you will never take my IP!): around 3Mbps down
Tor USB + VPN Super encrypted Mafia dealings: ultra dial-up

With the VPN, there's an option for DNS leak protection but it says it may cause issues so I left that unchecked and just adjusted my network adapter to use googles public DNS and all good.

Went with PIA and Im pretty happy with that reduction in speed so I may aswell use it for torrenting and geo-based content. If I ever decide to go bitcoin mining down silk road I might bother with tor

Since we are not part of the five eyes there are no such features as governmental backdoors or readily available logs for anti-piracy organizations tracking your linux distro downloads. It's available for most platforms and the ui is just one button you need to push... so setup and usage couldn't be any easier. Also, I personally know some of the developers so that's always a big plus

Since TOR was also mentioned, how does your threat model deal with a bad apple ? Or with an exit node injecting malware.

I can't be the only one that always thinks this is a thread about VPN for Norbs.

The only way they can trace you is if that server was 'raided' and it kept logs. PIA assures it doesnt keep logs, so essentially there is nothing to raid and trace back to you.
A reason to log on offshore would be to access geo-filtered content, but security wise, you're fine to connect via the closest server.
Just make sure you go to ipleaks.net when you are connected to the vpn and check what info people can see about you. If none of it is traced to you or your isp... all good. If there are 'leaks' it tells you what other steps you need to take but its fairly straightforward.

Have a look at tunnelbear, found it past the main tests, 500mb free to test it out per month.

If you past those tests, you're safe from MITM attacks which is all you should really be worried about unless you are torrenting or doing illegal shit, which is where you want to make sure that you're data is not being logged by the VPN. At the end of the day you have to take their word for it
