Windows 8.1 on may laptop - what a mistake

Post by smithcorp »

Should have gone with Win 7. What a pain in the arse. Windows opening and closing seemingly on their own, have to click about 6 times to open a fucking program. Who designed this fucking thing?

the interface is a turd but it runs well. Try a program like Start Is Back, Classic Shell or Start8 to disable most of the Windows 8 weirdness and make it more like 7.

I wouldn't personally go back to Windows 7 as Windows 8.1 has better battery life, lower boot times, improved gaming performance and a bunch of other things.

However some simple setting changes will make life easier (before you start installing 3rd party apps). These are:
  • Right clicking on the start button to access...
    • Control Panel
    • Shut down, Restart, etc...
  • Navigation settings...
    • right click on the task bar and select 'Properties'
    • Click the 'Navigation' tab
      • Enable 'When i sign in or close all applications on a screen go to the desktop instead of start'
      • Enable 'Show my desktop background on Start'
  • Loading applications through search (e.g. using the Start button then typing for what you want to load, the same as windows 7).
  • Making sure you are running all the "service pack" type updates (if you have a power button on the Start screen and you have a Store shortcut pinned to your task bar then you most likely have the latest version).
  • Enable 'Expand to current folder' in Windows Explorer (right click on some empty space in the tree view / left panel)
  • If screen resolution is low, enable 'Use small taskbar buttons' (right click the taskbar > Properties > Taskbar tab)

Can't stand windows 8 personally. Had to deal with it far too much working at JB. It disgusts me. I'll be waiting for win10 before I change OS, even then ill wait and see how that goes for a while, and wait for bug fixes etc before making a switch.

Win 10 looks like it'll be free to. Which is very interesting. I prefer win 7, I have win 8.1 on my pc and laptop but it feels like I'm not using it as much as I did in win7.

I think it'll be free so they can make money from their app store.

As with Astro.

It was made to run on lower powered devices, in-turn it runs faster.

Do you have all the updates installed?

Running Win10 on my laptop and it seems pretty good. A big step up from 8.
