A lot of the AIB partner cards are being listed in the usual online shops. Stock goes quickly however. AC and ArmA 3 on the 1080 is buttery smooth. Would love a 4k monitor to sit on my desk

This generation of cards is a big push for new monitors also.

MSY are listing Gainward 1080 cards for $1009/$1029, but only on the pdf parts list, not on the online store page.

Talking to one of the workers in Dandy, said there should be a shipment at the start of the month.

Looks like a BS launch by nVidia, reports on AMD are that they'll have plenty of stock at the release date, not sure if that's through good planning or just a lack of buyers though.

Just what I needed - some nice graphs showing vast improvements between the 780ti and the 1080. New purchase is entirely justified.

Re: Nvidia Pascal + Radeon Polaris

Post by wobblysauce »

And Polaris released..
480 is 960 price with 970 performance, straight in the sweet spot of most gamers that spend about $200USD for graphic cards.

Good 4k results with no filters, at that res you really do not need them.

I hope the RX480 does well for AMD just because we competition in the GPU sector, but I fear they'll have their arse handed to them when the GTX1060 comes out, nVidia can run that as a loss leader to hold on to market share if they so desire.

Not sure why you would release a new card that runs as well as your competitors old card even at a reduced price point? Not to mention you get to use AMD's lovely drivers .

Some people prefer budget cards. If it still provides great performance for 1080p at a fraction of the price of a 1070 1080 etc its all about value for money. Although I'd probably jusy buy a 970 if i wanted 970 performance lol

Oh, the 1060's are going to be 3GB & 6GB cards... and probably around the same price as the 480's. Decisions... grr!

I think AMD are making a play for market share and profitability. I saw a stat in a review this morning that said 85% of all graphics card sales are below $250US, not much point being great at the top end when there are so little sales in that price bracket to chase.

That's a fair point , I guess they feel they haven't the firepower to play with the big dollar (low volume) cards so may as well hammer the happy meal market which at the present time is me as I have a GTX960 which is a miles better card than the crossfire HD6950's I had .

By being recognised in the media for their top-end card, nVidia hog the limelight and grab a whole swag of brand recognition amongst the consumers. Logically one might read about the all conquering GTX1080 then decide it's a bit rich, then go look for a cheaper option under the same brand.

For sure, there is definitely that factor, but as Richo said, AMD must have decided they couldn't win that battle so why bother, go where the money is, which for them is probably wise given they have so little market share in both GPU and CPU markets.

With it performing similar to a 970 this might give an idea.

http://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/2246- ... gtx-980-ti

Faster than a single 980Ti in most games, but not by a lot. If you already have a 980Ti it would seem a bit pointless to me given the uncertainty and extra faffing about that SLI/crossfire brings. If you have a 980 then a second 980 would cost less and give better performance.

staticice shows the current cheapest rx480's at $369 with most stores at $439+
