Hello all
The eldest Smith daughter is heading to High School next year and the school has a BYOD laptop policy (no tablets and must be Windows-based). Only other requirements are:
Laptop with screen size 11 to 14 inches
4 Gb RAM
128 Gb hard drive
Wifi - 802.11 a/b/g/n 5Ghz (won't connect to school network otherwise)
Camera plus mic built in
2 USB
Battery minimum 5 hours use
Any suggestions for an affordable, robust model that meets those specs much appreciated.

Re: BYOD laptop advice
When they say "no tablets" what about the various 2-in-1 devices that are effectively tablets with a keyboard attached?

I'd personally look at the cheaper end of the range, as there is an almost 100% chance that it will get broken and need replacement at least once per year. Based on the above link, you'd probably be looking at around the $600 mark to fill all those requirements.

Its all a much of a muchness around the low end specs like that. The only thing I would say is to push really hard to get something with a SSD as it will make the laptop 50x more usable

The school said it needs to be Windows based (this is so the teacher only needs to know one OS to support the kids). Whilst your could get Windows to run on your Macbook (possibly) you couldn't then take it back to the shop to get it fixed if (when) it goes bang.richo wrote:Macbook Air 11" is the go but.... it all depends on what format the school uses .
