So lately ive been using the laptop on the tv a heap and it is amazing but it severely takes away the convenience of a laptop being a laptop lol. I think it is time to build a htpc. Main criteria is it can run 4k res (laptop doesnt) and actually be fast enough to run 4k videos. I may use it for rocket league but will just run that in 1080p. Any advice i think ill try grab parts 2nd hand to save money aswell

How much 4K content is there?

There are a lot of little HTPC machines around. I am currently using a BeeBox, but I dont have any 4K content.

Im after something that has an os as i like to use netflix on chrome then i can change to usa easy etc. And itd be nice if it was ok gfx so i could play rocket league on it too. That can be in 1080p though. Oh and there isnt a hell of alot of 4k stuff yet but i know there will be so its more just to prepare really

Damn you had to throw in RL. Like Norbs I was ready to suggest a Beelink or Nvidia Shield TV.

If you're only preparing for 4K, why not skip that until you've got the content to use it? Save coin now and when you want that upgrade.

Any Intel cpu from i3 6100 up supports 4k. Can always upgrade to a stand alone card later if you want to do more with the box (games).

Yep, you need the right spec of hdmi cable to support 4k, other than that, the onboard video works well enough.

I just got this from a Kickstarter campaign.

http://shop.udoo.org/preorder-x86.html

Mine was $130. They claim it will drive 4K. I havent tried it yet.

From the Kickstarter page...
UDOO X86 is 10 times more powerful than Raspberry Pi 3, able to drive up to three 4K screens at the same time.

Not exactly what you're after but tiny little Beelink do 4K, roughy $80 Aus.

They'll do 4k, but not 4k video. Not enough decoding power.

Really? It's marked as 4K60fps. I just watched a YouTube vid of a guy playing a 4K vid from his phone on it.

I can see performance being a concern maybe it depends what codecs and whatnot the files are in?

Cheers for all the advice. Cousin is giving me a good price on his gaming pc ( same as mine except gtx 680 instead of a 970) so I'm sure itll do the trick. More expensive than all these gizmos but itll do everything i need no dramas
