What wheel do you own/use?

Post by norbs »

Talking to a guy at work today that buys media for Logitech, and he was telling me they "own" the steering wheel market. I told him that might be the case for lower end wheels, because that is all they make, but he is adamant that they outsell all other wheels by a huge margin.

So, to see if he is full of shit or not, lets go.

Thrustmaster TX here.

Using a Logitech, but have a thrustmaster tx for my next rig.

However I believe they would own the casual market (talking xbox/ps4 players), we aren't the target demographic. It's the GT and Forza players. And they are much much bigger than the hardcore crowd

The market is certainly tiered, and I think the tiers get exponentially smaller the higher you go. I wouldn't be surprised if Logitech owns the lowest tiers. The higher tiers aren't even available in retail outlets.

Currently on a Fanatec CSW V2.
Formerly (but still own): Fanatec CSW V1, Logitech G25, Logitech Driving Force (bought for Playstation 2)

It could be true, but there seems to have been a shift away from Logi since the G27. Hardly ever see anyone on sim forums talking about the G29 and later which makes me think they were a massive flop. For PC simracers at least.

Here's a poll off the iracing forum from January. Logitech is ahead, but it's not really dominating.

Heavily modified G25 still going strong, mind you my next wheel will certainly not be a Logitech.

Logitech G27. Even if they dont own the market, they are definitely the best value for money. I personally dont see the value in some of the gear you blokes use.
Has anyone not had a problem with their Fanatec?

Sure, my fanatec broke down. It was an early model, maybe it was some teething problem.
They've fixed it under warranty, if a bit slowly, plus the Australian partner doing the fixes was a bit sloppy, there were loose screws when it came back.

Then something else gave up in it (can't remember what) and I bought another, because otherwise it's a pretty good wheel. This second one is working fine for years.

The center rubber piece is now sticky, though. Lucky the grip is all leather, so it's inconsequential.

I too have had repairs done under warranty. The upside being that it can actually be repaired and Fanatec are even okay for you to do the repairs yourself when they send you the parts in some instances.

The value argument will vary from person to person. I actually see value in hot-swappable realistic wheels and heavy duty kit that feel good to use.

My G25 got a good spanking for many a year, but once the pots died in the 2 sets of pedals and shifters that I went through, I thought it was a good opportunity to try something completely different.

Yeah i guess if I had a few less hobbies Id probably get something more hardcore wheel wise. I also have the luxury of never having tried something other than logitech to know if Im really missing out.

Got the Logi G29 about 18 months ago.
Thought is was great for a while, all the buttons you could want.
But about 9 months ago, it borked. Really strange, it would be fine one day, and crap the next.
Shuddering and loosing centre, got worse and worse. Pulled it apart more times than I care to mention
I know I'm not the best driver in the world, but I was driving fine and would the go hard around a turn and it wouldn't centre again.
Lost confidence and stayed away from racing for about 8 months.
Thrustmaster T300 now, first time I've been comfortable for almost a year.

Thrustmaster T300 base with Ferrari 599XX EVO wheel, Thrustmaster H pattern shifter and Fanatec CSR Elite pedals.

Wasn't that impressed with my previous Fanatec wheel and before that I had a range of different Logitech wheels dating back to the old Formula Force GP.

The T300 base is great value for money.

Logitech G29/920, so far so good.

Casual market would be owned by Logitech I would imagine. I know here in NZ, if you were to walk into a game shop for a wheel, Logitech would be the only option in 90% of them, and the other option the budget Mad Catz or something like that.

CSW v1 with BMW rim, no problems with it in 4+ years I've had it. Will likely upgrade to the Fanatec Podium DD wheel.

I think we can conclude that Logitec has no extra market segment in the ARSE sim racing circles.

This was an excellent study, my learned colleagues, with very good results.

But I would bet that there are a lot more Logitech wheels sold than any of the other brands, they just get casual use and then get banished to the garage.

Speaking of wheels, I'm going to sell my G27. Does anyone know what they go for second hand?

If you find a fanboi you should be able to make a profit off the original RRP.
There are some around that still feel this is one of the best wheels ever due to their low input latency. Check recent sales on eBay. ;)
