The ISS went over tonight and I've never had a go at shooting it so I thought I'd give it a try.
Wow it's fast!!
Went from W to SE in only 4 minutes. No time to track it on the tripod so shot it hand held (400mm+ 1.4x + crop body) and managed to get a couple of pictures vaguely in focus :)

Excellent Kev!

Mole, you're a living breathing example of the adage that says "good pictures come from legwork".

Had another go at the sun today as there's a decent cluster of sunspots on it right now.

Nice Kev. Have you tried hydrogen alpha filter paper? I guess at the price it's not the sort of luxury you can dip in for too regularly.

That would be cool but it's near enough 100 quid for one. Might have to wait for a bonus!

mmm interestingly, that hydrogen alpha filter is basically a 650nm long pass filter.
I have those in my sorter at work! Bit small but I could make a light-tight frame to put a spare one in to try.

Rocks are good! Some rad shots there... That one looking down made me feel a bit of vertigo, and I usually don't get weird with heights!

A couple from me from the other day wandering around the zoo.

Love the expression in the last one along with the body twist of the fella chasing him down with his eye on the prize.

First photo I've uploaded to Flickr in months ... suffice to say I'm not shooting much at the moment.

Those are great - especially the second and third. Also you've made a massive jump from the first attempts - scenery does help too, really adds to the images, and being near the coast (doesn't look too populated an area) maybe helps the skies.

Thanks :)
Yes really properly dark skies help a lot. I got a lot more 'cosmic' clouding with these.

I've got another location to try as well that might be even better but I need to check dates and position of the milky way before I got there.

Very nice Kev. Still lots of light pollution in that second one. I suppose it is hard to get away from that in England. That said, I love that it is so wide. Do you find shooting at f/2.8 easier than say f/5.6 or higher? When I try to open the apeture right up I find focus hard to get right.

I mostly did 16mm 30s F2.8 ISO 3200/6400 as I knew that was going to be pretty close to what I needed.

Seemed to work pretty well. Despite the maths saying 30s is ok, I have a little bit of trailing on the stars but not so you notice unless you zoom right in. I think next time I'd go down to 25s.

The full arch is 14 portrait pictures stitched together. With a bit more 'shopping I might be able to drop the light pollution a bit more but I'm pretty happy with it.
