I will be if I get stuck. I ordered a tripod and bag and tomorrow I'll get a UV filter and a remote shutter release.

I did some more shopping and I got a Lowepro 160 bag, a Manfrotto MKC3-H01 tripod and a Nikon MC-DC2 shutter release. Now I need to learn how to use it all properly as I was out shooting the moon and some stars on the 18-55 mm lens and the results were ordinary to say the least. But I found some good stuff to read on the web about shooting that stuff. I'll also get a 55-300 mm lens too at some point too.

To shoot the moon (bright arse thing it is) you need to use roughly daylight settings. Try 1/200th at f/16...ISO200. And see how that goes.

Sunny 16 rule (sweet 16). It's very handy to know that one. It's going to take some getting used to, but learn about exposure... Shutter, aperture, and ISO, and how they relate to each other. Getting your head around that is one of the biggest hurdles, and it will all click when you work it out.

I found a web page that said try starting at 1/100th at f/11 ISO 100 and then go 200th, 400th and 50th, 25th. I tired 1/50th @ f11 ISO 100 auto focus and got...

I need a zoom lens now. I'm happy with this start. but room to improve I will try the settings you said Dex. Thanks for posting them.

I'm starting to think about it terms of our eyes. Pupils narrow when it's bright and when it's dark they widen and you need more time to look at something to get the light in.

Thanks for the info. I went playing with f16 and f11 shooting clouds about 5 pm to see the difference and it's noticeable. I also went out just after 9 pm to try the moon again but manual focus. It's a bit of a bugger to get use too as I'm short sighted and wear glasses. Normally anything up close I don't need the glasses but I don't have a prescription view finder. What made it harder was the moon looks so small at 55 mm but I got it focused. Hopefully by March I'll have a 55 to 300 mm Nikon lens. If I need anymore help I'll make a new thread to save hijacking this one. :)

Just a quick one... there's a little dial near your viewfinder called a diopter, that adjusts the focus of the viewfinder to suit your eye, play around with that a bit, and it could help.

The clouds are too far away for you to see a noticeable difference between f/11 and f/16... The only difference you might see is a difference in exposure.

I have the focus of the view finder set for my vision with glasses. That's the easiest way to go for me. That way I can look at something normally and when I look down the view finder it's the same rather than messing about taking glasses on and off.

Yeah cool. Some people that have come into the store don't know it exists. Easy (an important) thing to miss.

It was the first thing to do in the book pretty much. Make sure those brackets in the view finder were in focus for you.

Wow! Do you know how many actuations Knappo? They are rated to something like 100,000. If it's done less than what it's rated to, couldn't you technically argue that with canon. Specially given the laws the ACCC enforces for expected life of a product.

I'm getting Err 30's with my 50D after as few as 3 frames. Pretty sure its the shutter but I'm getting that checked out tomorrow.

Actuation would be up there but I think its short of the 100k. Its done its fair share of star trails...

EDIT: Shutter Count = 30662 :melt:
Camera is going off tomorrow as I NEED it at the end of next month so I don't have the time to ARSE around with Cannon.

Got a Nikkor 55-300mm zoom today. Hopefully I can try it on the moon tonight if it's not too cloudy or hazy. I should have gone one bag size bigger as it does fit and everything is very snug but it might be a little too snug. It will do for now as it's not rolling around in a car or getting bashed about. Just giving it a place to hide while at home. Besides a bigger bag in time I don't plan on getting anything else.

I took some pics of the moon with the zoom but it's a bit smoky here so they are not the best. I was at 300m and with the smoke it's hard to tell how clear the lens is at that focal length. I need a clearer night so hopefully Sunday is clear and I can play with it and try 200, 250 and 300 mm.

Recently acquired Canon WP-DC9 polycarbonate housing for my IXUS Powershot SD850 IS (which now shoots raw). $250 new, $44 on Fleabay. Excellent condition with all bits and pieces.

Very hard to find, I had to wait 6 months for one. Have replaced the main O-ring and filed down the moulding lines in the groove which cause leakage. Also lubricated all the buttons with silicone.
