Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious

Post by Bauer »

I hinted at this earlier in the week as I drove it last weekend.

Today I drove it home and it is now tucked away in my garage :vibes:

Was a nice run up the highway from Hobart.

Does this one have the k-series motor or the Toyota engine?

K-series. It screams like a Land Rover haha. Love the intake sound.

Excellent. We clearly have the same taste in cars Bauer :)

Be really interested to hear how you get on with this. I used to really want one but when I had a sit in one I couldn't fit in it properly. The gearbox felt pretty shoddy compared to the rifle-bolt action on the MX-5 too.

Gearbox on the Exige had to be manhandled a bit but didn't feel sloppy. I assume that's a completely different box though (or at least had significant work done between k-series and supercharged Toyota).

Gave the new girl a wash yesterday. When I saw it for the first time it was dirty and that hadn't changed when I picked it up. It needed a clean up. I just gave it a wash for the photos but it could use a full detail in and out.

The story goes a bit like this. I started thinking about a late model MX5 with a powered hard top etc but I knew that would just become my daily as they are so user friendly until you need a 3rd seat. I then had my eye on a Mercedes SLK 230 (2 seater, powered hard top) but gut feel said that was going to be too much like a boulevard cruiser. Then a bloke at work told me about the Elise for sale. Thanks to my mate at work, I knew how much he wanted for it but his for sale ad only had "offers" so that's what I did - at $10k lower than what I was told he had on it. I even apologised if I was lowballing but since I didn't know how much he wanted, I could only offer what I could afford. We immediately met half way and I still did another $2k better than that before we settled on a figure. Very happy with the final price. The previous owner and his family were heading off to Dubai for 5-10 years so all their cars and house needed to go. The Lotus was the last of their cars to go (to the point where we dropped them off at a car rental place on our way back through Hobart as they had no cars left)

The car itself is awesome fun to own and drive. It is very raw and rigid. Not sure if it was nerves or kidneys but I had to stop twice for a piss on the way home with it. I could not travel around Australia with it. It goes like the clappers though considering it is only a 1.8l Rover engine. Yet due to that, it is economical as hell. Also has an Alpine sound system but I don't know if it even works.

Once I am in, I have more head and leg room than I did in my Crewman but I have been told I look like a huntsman getting in to a matchbox as I negotiate my way in. I am 6'2 however so also not unexpected.

There are a few marks and scratches on it, not unexpected for a car of its age. The bottom of the front clamshell has ground away, also not unusual. I was also given the car cover (pyjamas) which is a made to fit cover for the Elise with a big lotus logo on it. Very cool.

For clarity, it is a 2002 Lotus Elise.

The design hasn't aged at all has it. It's a proper stunner. I'm guessing a rare sight on the road over there too.
