Vw Dsg Transmissions

Post by Hazelb »

Gents
Asreking for some advice if I may. Looked at a Vw Jetta tonight. The 2010 1.4l 7 speed via a Dsg box.

During the test drive I noticed a bit of shudder when leaving the line. Perfectly fine once moving and at speed the box was great (actually so was the car).

My question is has any one had any experience with these type of transmissions and is that normal or is it something that I would need to be concerned about?

I have one in my Skoda. That shudder doesn't happen all the time but it will catch you off guard occasionally. Sometimes i think it's the smoothest auto I've ever driven, other times it's like the roughest.

Had a DSG in our Tiguan. It takes some getting used to but there was no shudder from take off. It loves to take off in 2nd though so be careful when getting used to the gearbox when trying to jump a gap on traffic.

A good DSG should be as smooth as single malt scotch.

That being said not really fussed with scotch (or DSG's)

The 2nd gear take offs drive me mad. It feels like you have turbo lag.

Absolutely, so you put your foot right down, kicks into 1st and you rocket away. Just takes some getting used to is all. It's essentially an automatic clutch with a preselect manual gearbox.

Got an 8 speed proper auto in the Touareg and it's much better for town driving. The DSG is a bit of a pain on occasions in stop start traffic.

I've got the 6sp in my Scirocco. Love it to bits. I don't get any judder off the line though.

As said, you can catch it out if you decide to accelerate just as it thinks you're going to need to drop a gear (rolling up to a junction and it's clear so you go) but apart from that I think it's great. Should be nicely smooth on the gear changes. You might find a bit of 'over deceleration' if it drops to 1st just before you come to a halt as if you've just hit the brakes but you get used to it.

Thanks guys. Forum reading indicated it maybe more of an issue with the 7speed version (I think it's called the q200). There was a recall in 2013 to fit a new module so I might just check that out as well as have it mechanically checked. For a 1.4l engine it goes like stink...

The box at all other times is awesome.. Just that rolling part at the start.

Mines the 1.4 and it's torquey as fuck. It goes like the clappers when you give it a bit of welly. I think that's also why the gearbox shifts up so early all the time, use the torque to save fuel.

The cars with DSG also come with launch control. It was so much fun in the Tiguan screeching off the lights and eating falcons and commodores.

7 speed has the dry clutch which has caused issues. 6 speeds are in the higher torque applications and have a wet clutch and are generally fine. I'd take it to a VW specialist to look at for a pre-purchase inspection to see if it's normal otherwise get another car.

Our gearbox (the 6 speed) has the occasional thud when it gets wrong footed (go to drive off and slam on the brakes for example - then has to change to a different gear to that it had pre-selected) but it never shudders.

2013 1.4l Golf with that gearbox. had from new and around 35,000kms on it now. Also have that shudder occasionally, asked about it at the last service and they sais its just one of those common thing that isnt doing any damage. Smooth as anything all the other time.

Like everyone else, always amazes how well it goes for a 1.4L when I drive it.

I have a DSG in my VW CC. Being VW's top of the line car you'd think it'd have a well programmed DSG box, but I find its rough as guts at times.

But my biggest gripe is its gear pre-selection mapping. It only seems to pre-select up a gear, meaning that up-shifts can be very smooth but down shifts can be very clunky. If I was programming a DSG box that is the reverse of how I'd do it, I'd have all pre-selection to be down a gear.

My rationale is that if I am increasing speed and needing to shift up it is usually something that can be well anticipated (i.e. car is accelerating smoothly, revs are steadily increasing, up-shift is soon going to be needed); but when I really need the gearbox to be responsive is when I want to accelerate rapidly (e.g. when I want to do an overtake - unanticipated & rapid increase of rev's), which is why I'd prefer the pre-selected gear to be a down-shift. Also, with 6 gears in the box it means that to have an effective acceleration often requires the box to drop down 2 gears; this means that I am often tapping the down-shift paddle twice instead of waiting for the DSG box to catch up.

Or you know you could have a manual and actually control the vehicle ;)

I think its a pretty good value for money car. It has a lot of features for the money; I have almost all features you would expect to get in a C or E class Mercedes, or a 3 or 5 series BMW. The car will out accelerate almost anything on the road (you have to get in to HSV, FPV, and other specific high performance sports cars to get something faster to 100). The CC is a good long-haul car, it drives very smooth and very comfortably so I have found drives between Melbourne and Adelaide are not as tiring as they have been in other cars.

But... whilst it has almost all the bells and whistles there is an apparent "near enough is good enough" attitude to some of the details. Its very solidly put together and the interior is well constructed, but things like the on-board computer can be very sluggish to respond to commands, the active cruise control can be quite clunky at times, the DSG mapping is backwards in my opinion (but so are most of them).

Its one of those cars that you start to think how great it is, especially for how good value they seem to be, but just when you start thinking that it does something annoying to bring your opinion down a peg.

(I am talking about a 2014 model VW CC).
