Books and other reading material.

C.J. had the idea to have a forum for things people are reading. Thanks for the idea Chris, lets hear about what people are reading.

Great idea..

We need some kind of spoiler system tho... so some can discuss the book.. and those yet to read avoid the thread..

Good thinking Pix. Maybe the OP should put a spoiler tag in the thread name if he is going to give the final twist in the book when talking about it. Otherwise, people can make a new Spoiler thread for that book.

Does that make sense?

RSC has a system where you could wrap spoiler tags around something and the reader could highlight it if they wanted to read it.

Is that possible with this forum software?

Otherwise spoiler tags in the title would be appropriate.

...if you're into fantasy;

I can recommend Anne Bishop The Black Jewels trilogy is very good.
Also Jennifer Fallon, Demon Child trilogy.

Keep away from Terry Goodkind. It's rather bad-kind. hehe. Only the fist book of that monster 10(?) part sequel thing is good, don't make the mistake of buying any other. You'll be bored shitless.
Surprise, no sig. Now there is. Or is there?

We could always modify it to be able to do that, it's a rather simple thing to change the color or even the css display attribute of the text to hide it completely.

In short an Epic Saga like Lord of the Rings But i found it better.

Author: Robbin Hobb
A 9 Book series, broken up into 3 book trilogy's
The Farseer Trilogy
The Liveship Traders
The Tawny Man
Some play it safe on the merry-go-round, others go for the thrills of the roller-coaster.

"The Gambling Man" by Kevin Perkins. Fascinating insight into the live of Big Bill Waterhouse, the biggest bookie Aussie (possibly the world) have ever seen. Some of the bets he was taking back in the days were absolutely phenomenal. Dont need to be into horse racing to enjoy it, has lots of backstabbing and twists and turns. I dont read much, so it takes a good book to make me not want to put it down!

Another awesome one is "About Face", its about this hard as nails army (insert rank here), and his stories from the times he served overseas in Korea and Vietnam. Some of his stories are incredible, another one I couldn't put down.

At last, a book sub-forum

Spent a lot of time as a youngster reading sci-fi, Asimov mostly. Got out of the habit when I went into further education as I wasn't good at reading text books.

These days I'm back into reading as tv is crap and I feel I should make more of my free time so these days it's Hawking and Dawkins for me. Particularly Dawkins stuff about evolution. His latest (The Greatest Show on Earth ) has the facts to prove it apparently. I'll report once I've finished it.

A book by L Flint called "Hustler" a guy I knew in highschool back in about 1995 stole it from a newsagent, and after much persuading he gave it to me. I havnt finished it yet.

Seriously though... I want to read more, and I plan to get a copy of 'a brief history of time' by Stephen Hawking soon. It sounds like I'd like it.

I've read through all of Alistair Reynolds' catalogue lately and am just getting started on Peter F Hamilton's Pandora's Star. I rally enjoy hard sci-fi/space opera stuff. I read Star Wars novel when I want to take things easy for a bit - i've got over 90 of them in the book case alone!

same over here mate. home movies are fine tho :D

I am wondering what series to buy my daughter. I have been reading the mister men books to her, and she has a massive range of other books. Is it too early to get into Narnia, LOTR or the like? she is 17 months... edit - this would be for my entertainment

Currently reading Spike Milligan's series of books about his service during WW2. Very funny if a little dated at times, and the general silliness and relentless jokes are occasionally interrupted by moments of terror which remind you that although it's mostly about him and his mates having a laugh, you can't escape the backdrop of horror. Some moments obviously stayed with him to the grave.

I read those books many years ago, really enjoyed them, the 'general silliness' is fairly typical of Milligans books though, never did finish his Black Beauty according to book. He was quite a prolific writer
