Sony has officially unveiled Gran Turismo 6 at a 15th anniversary party at Silverstone.

Set to go on sale later this year, the sixth generation of the popular racing game promises to offer "new levels of authenticity" as well as new tracks and cars. The game will also have downloadable content and "expanded connectivity with other devices such as smart phones and tablets."

All the vehicles and tracks from Gran Turismo 5 will carryover, but they will be joined by a host of new cars like the Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale, Alpine A110 1600S, Ferrari Dino 246 GT, KTM X-BOW R and Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3. In total, the game will be launched with 1,200 models and more will be added later on. Players can also personalize a number of cars with aerodynamic parts and custom wheels.

Gran Turismo 6 will also offer new levels of realism thanks to a partnership with Yokohama and KW Automotive. Sony says the two companies acted as technical development partners for the game’s new physics engine.

In a statement Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi said "We’re pleased to deliver GT6 to PlayStation 3 as we have a very loyal community on that platform. However, we have refactored the game to make it very flexible and expandable, with a view to making many future developments. I am very pleased with everything about the new game and the new additions, but the launch will be only the beginning for GT6. The game will continue to develop throughout its life. I already have many ideas for things I want to achieve in the next 15 years of Gran Turismo!”

Nice, with the new consoles coming out based on the PC systems.. can not wait for the emulators/Clones.

I'll probably give this one a miss.

Great though they were, I get a bit bored quite quickly. Your 15th race in a 1.2 Yaris just to get enough money to buy some shitbox Prelude or something starts to get a bit boring after a while. And to get anything decent you have to do a 10 race series with 1 hour races etc. I think they lost the immediacy of the original ones by having way too many cars to choose from and silly targets to get anything decent.

And nothing will ever beat the Impreza I had specced to the max on GT1. It went like stink and shred tyres in 3 laps :D Awesome!

The online challenges made it easy to rake in lots of money in GT5.

My real problem was the non-collision physics and generally the whole premium models/non moddables.

Vilante, I take it you have not played the other via other means then.

Kev, I loved the same thing about the Subby in GT1, playing it a few days ago .. ekk the age of graphics on it..

I seriously have no idea why they're bothering with this generation of console. I pity the fool.
Had my fun with GT5, not forking out for the same thing again... same slow arsed load times.. makes me crazy.
Bring on the next gen!

agreed pinger$, I'm surprised they said PS3 only... surely with the imminent release of PS4 (probably around the same time as GT6 should it not move out to June next year) they would be on the PS4 as well as the PS3.

It's weird they're releasing this for PS3. Maybe porting to PS4 will require to much work so they have to get this out before everyone switches. Otherwise you'd think they could just bump the resolution, shaders etc to make it a PS4 release title. Surely they'd sell more copies that way even if it were slightly subpar for PS4 standards.

GT5 is the only one I've played and I got bored with it after a week. I only played single player and the way you can upgrade all the cars so much killed any feeling of competition. Not that there's much to start with when racing against AI. There's no sense of accomplishment when winning or losing is down to how many upgrades you've bought. That's just grinding. Hotlapping nurby was good fun though.

Agreed Darren. But I guess it's more of a car collection game than a driving simulation, regardless of what it says on the box.

For PS6? haha

GT5 was such a grindfest that I doubt that I'll get GT6

The only thing I'm going to dust off the PS3 for is GTA5 by the look

Spot on!

I was using mine as a media player for a fair while till the thing gave me the shits at not supporting certain file formats. I almost sold the Playstation but GTA5 is the only thing that keeps me from parting with it.

Cool. Almost worth getting just for that.

I remember someone made that for GPL but you couldn't get it. Legal action must've been threatened I think.

Yeah when they had a stand at the FoS one year. I seem to remember it was on the strict instruction it was never released as they would have had to pay a license fee for it.

That video sounds as if they have tried to cut real world sfx into it.

I really do hope they can bring the sound engine up to par.

Nice, spotted bathurst in that video and a quick google suggests it's definitely in there.

Probably the only thing that would make me want to buy it at the moment - so I'm still not excited.
