Bargains and best prices...

Post by norbs »

I renamed this thread so as it can be a place for all bargains or good deals you find.

http://frugalrouleur.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That site compares prices between the top online shops. Very good.

I guess this thread is semi-relevant...

Is this a good deal? http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/45850" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Obviously its entry level so some of you will scoff immediately.. but ignoring that :)

I have no plans to upgrade from the MTB at the moment.. cos I'm not really into the whole cycling thing - more so just doing it to off set the amount of beer I drink. But damn, it is hardwork getting up hills on the heavy bastard!

As much as I would like to say go for it, department store bikes are always a risk imho. The ex wifes brother bought one in the early 90's to ride with me. It went back 6 times before consumer affairs got involved. It was a nightmare.

Buy a better bike and I bet you will be in to the whole cycling thing. Amazing how a decent bike can change your complete opinion of the sport. I have got about 4 friends in to riding in the last year or so, all said the same, they didn't realise how fun cycling was until they had a bike decent enough to make it fun.. it's odd.

about a year ago i was doing plenty of km's on a Kmart mountain bike. Sure it wasn't as light or highly spec'd as a more expensive bike but there was nothing wrong with it. I paid about $250 for it. But you can get better stuff from bike shops for pretty close to the same money. My current Merida hybrid was $400 from Gold Cross and it's awesome. Actually Gold Cross are doing 50% off all Fuji bikes until tomorrow, if you've got some spare cash go and grab one quick smart. I'm sure there's more in the shops but it's worth a look http://www.goldcross.com.au/Fuji-festival-2011.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Since you're in Adelaide, you could go to the newly opened Giant store in the city :) they might have some options for you to consider

for what it's worth, my opinion on the bike you posted....

Diamondback aren't *too* bad in all honesty.. a mate has one and by all accounts it rides quite well. That being said, it's a bit higher spec. the components on the bike in your OP are the base level and quite old tech (eg 8 speed cluster and 3 piece cranks). Would it make a difference? probably. Would it matter? maybe.. only you can make that call.

more importantly, what i think you might find is that with an aluminium frame coupled with a steel fork and potentially an alloy seat post the ride is likely to be quite harsh. Aluminium frames are known to have a harsh ride which is why they are generally paired with carbon fibre forks and seat post to damp some of the road shock.

all that being said, for the price that it was being listed, it's a lot of bike for the cash, and assuming it's set up and maintained well enough it'd probably outrun your MTB by a fair margin. Though i suspect that you'd probably be left wondering what you can get for a few dollars more :)

hope that is of some help :)

Was chatting to a mate who is a builder last night. Somehow got onto bikes and Co2 canisters. He just replaced his old Co2 nail gun with some thing that uses some sort of explosive apparently, sounded fucking dangerous to me. Any way, he is sending me his last 10 Co2 canisters, that will mean I have 40 of the bastards after just buying them for $1.50 each off Cell.

He also mentioned that you can get them off some building suppliers and he also used this site http://finewhip.cart.net.au/store/co2/1 ... artridges/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; when his local supplier had run out.

Edit : I just saw it mentioned on ACF as well.

I challenge you to beat my bargain I got last night, the best part is, I recieved a shipping comfirmation this afternoon with a postage tracking number....

Image

That's over 1k worth of rubber I might add, average tyre price is around $70

100% discount on all Geax products for about half an hour on their site, it was an error, me and a mate managed to get orders through, after adding a sticker to make it actually worth something. I was just about to post on here about it when the site went down for about 10 mins and came back with normal pricing. Meanwhile my card has been charged measly $12.22 ..lol..

Winning!

i have tubeless ready rims so its no biggy. Geax tread is supposed to be pretty decent anyway, I'll give it a crack, I'm about to have a 3rd bike to put shoes on as well so a little store of rubber might be good.

I see there's a price drop coming for the PS3. PS3 Console, 2 games & HDMI cable for $349. Deal that JB is running from the 22nd of August. Is there a PS4 on the way or something?

Nope - I think its just overdue to compete with the Xbox bundles. PS3 hasn't exactly lit the world on fire like the PS2 did. I might grab one though :D
