It's from Brian Shul's book "Sled Driver". Although published in the 1990s, it will still cost you hundreds of dollars if you decide to buy a copy.

The story has been around for a long time but I suspect it is actually true.

Another book on the SR-71 I'm keen to read is Paul Crickmore's "Beyond the Secret Missions" because there are detailed accounts of from some VVS pilots who tried to intercept it. Some people have a hard time swallowing this but it was the real reason - or one of them - why the Blackbird was retired. By the mid-1980s it was no longer invulnerable.

Even the greatest designs - and the SR-71 surely was the greatest - have their use-by date.

Lets say I have a "copy" of Sled Driver....

If anyone were interested, I could perhaps pass it along.

Digital. It's a PDF, quite readable.

I've just run into the video version of the original, it's probably even better as told by the guy who flew that day :)

If only there was an X-15 out of Edwards at the time. That would teach those smug Habu driving bastards hehe.
