A New Year - A Blast from the Past Challenge

Post by Muppet »

In 1973, Jackie Ickx did a 3:12.7 in qualifying for the Spa 1000 km race in a Ferrari 312PB. During the race, Henri Pescarolo did a 3:13.4 in a Matra-Simca MS670B, which stands as the current record for the circuit at an average speed of 163.086 mph.

One of the cars that Box so kindly has set up on his server, the Porsche 917K, in the hands of Pedro Rodríguez, did a 3:13.600 in 1971.

Your New Year's challenge for 2017, some 46 years later is this, get the track http://www.mediafire.com/file/6b3d6uhs5 ... pa1966.rar, get on the server and go beat it.

Box's server stat's are here http://54.206.7.120:50041/lapstat

There are other cars loaded you can also have fun in. Also, have fun working out which track side objects are solid or not :). Hint, the one Jackie Stewart ended upside down in the basement of, with fuel leaking onto him, is!

See if you can beat this record though, on Friday night my first lap of the race took me 15 mins and I died 8 times, now beat that ya bastards

Image

edit: Box, your times were set in 2016, they don't count lol

To add some more times as we have these cars...

1968:

Ford GT-40 Mk1 quali time 3:40.3
Porsche 908LH quali time 3:45.7

1962:

Lotus 25 Race time 3:55.6 (Jim Clark was faster in the race than quali)

and if you're feeling like dying a proper manly race drivers death...

1956:

Maserati 250F 6 cyl 4:14.7

And it just became a CYBD thread. 5 laps and he's done a 3:25.6 in the 917K and I bet he didn't even die once :)

Slowly slowly slowly starting to get the hang of the circuit again. At least making cleanish laps now :) I smile the whole time though. KS really need to release this track for real, this is a poor imitation.

It's not a poor imitation it's a rip from rfactor2. It's got all the normal issues for an illegal track at will never be fixed.

Have to agree with Darren, the Lotus 49 is fun to drive around here, really feels good. I finally was able to make some clean laps in the 917K as well. I drove the 962c too and damn it is rock solid and fast, but for some reason it didn't record my time.

In practice mode I did take the 2015 Ferrari, it's almost flat to the floor the whole time, but with no breaking points, I was running mostly without electricity and was still able to go under 3 minutes.

Really really want a proper Kunos version of this track now. Once I got the rhythm of the place again it's a cracker.

Question for you history anoraks.

I have a question about the kink in the rFactor conversion for AC between Eau Rouge and Les Combes.

The GPL version didnt have the right left kink in the Kemmel Straight

AC rFactor conversion has this right left kink at 0:27

I have not been able to find any footage of Spa in the 60's to know if this set of corners existed. Most track maps are pretty loose illustrations so its hard to know. All I have for reference is the GPL version of Spa that I drove a lot.

It was there. The GPL tracks were made from track maps and photos in books, so they were not accurate. The GPL guys couldn't get out to the tracks or get better data so it was stitched together as best they could.

This clip shows it

Also the chicane after Les Combes and before Brunenville was used in the early 70's for Formula 1 because they were concerned with safety. To me, a chicane where you line up a light post as your entry point didn't do alot for safety though. Sportscars didn't use that chicane until 1974, which is why the 1973 times were never beaten and won't be as the kink added a few seconds to the lap times.

My favourite "Spa is bullshit" story is one from the 1972 Spa 24hrs, Hans-Joachim Stuck was co-driving with Jochen Mass in a Capri when Stuck pitted and handed over to Mass whilst warning Mass to look out for body parts in the Masta Kink, Mass approached the kink expecting to see a car strewn across the road and was instead confronted with the remains of an official. They went on to finish second in the race.

Imagine it today, pulling into the pits and the crew removing a track marshals forearm from a radiator duct.
