More Incar Rallying footage from VTRacing

Post by VTRacing »

On Sunday we had a fun day to say thank you to all the officials who help make rallying possible in Queensland. It was held at the autocross track at Willowbank, just next door to Queensland Raceway.

I've uploaded a 3 minute video showing from inside the car showing how it should be done, as well as all the stuff-ups I made taking people for rides around the track.

Just a quick point, rally tyres are not allowed at the track, so we were using some very crappy road tyres. Of course, this made for some interesting slide angles. :)

Thanks, I'm about to upload what I hope will be a better quality version.

(And I have no idea how I double-posted this topic)

No problem. :)

I just want to explain why I spun the car, cos it's funny.

Essentially, the handbrake locked on. I have a pin that I usually insert through the handbrake mechanism to secure the ratchet, which turns it into a fly-off handbrake.

Unfortunately I forgot to put the pin in, so when I pulled the lever the handbrake locked on a couple of notches...

Idiot.

There is, it's just VERY faint.

The only noise being picked up is coming through my intercom mic (just a limitation of the camera equipment I'm using), so it's not picking up much from outside the car. If both driver and navigator mics were plugged in it would be better, but I think I still have to up the gain in the recorder.

I've got a few vids from outside the car at Rally Queensland that I can upload if you want to hear what the car sounds like. I think it sounds pretty hot. :)

Here you go, some external footage from Rally Queensland last year.

We didn't do too badly, 3rd in the Queensland Championship component and about 10th outright in the Australian Championship field. Had some co-driver issues which meant I couldn't go flat-out.

What are you shooting at? Is it like some sort of modern Biathlon? :D

Yeah every spectator you kill takes 5 seconds off your final time... :)

The popping is the anti-lag system (what every turbo car in lfs needs); basically it keeps the turbo spinning by dumping fuel into the exhaust, the pops spin the exhaust impeller and means that when you get back on the throttle it doesn't take as long to reach full boost again.

the guy i work with calls those turbo whoosh's between gears 'fanny farts'. That anti lag system i reckon is up there with the best rally developments. Such a clever fix for what must have been such a shit experience back in the 80's when the turbo cars were real monsters.

Great sound in the external footage! is that an external mic?

The camera positioning in the incar footage is, I think, one of the best positions in the car I've seen (it's perfectly centered, windscreen's not too high, not too low, and you can see what the driver's doing); better than in a lot of incar professional rally shots.

For the external footage, that's the inbuilt mic of a JVC Hard-drive camera. Nothing special. But the car would sound good on anything :p

As for the in-car camera positioning, thank you very much. I set that one up myself. The last footage I shot I couldn't see the gear lever so I made sure it was in view this time.

Dent, hope I didn't dent the bloody thing.

I said that because when we had the big slide towards the edge of the track, I cleaned up a traffic bollard with the left rear quarter-panel.

And no, not dented. But I did mark the paintwork...
