iPhoto. You should be in Apples thoughts, be setting up your phone in iTunes to sync albums and what not with iPhoto (or others ie: Aperture). Its designed around coming home, syncing phone, sorting images in iPhoto then syncing the albums between your complete library of photos & the iPhone.

Re: iPhone and photos
iphoto seems to want to import photos from the phone.. which i dont really want to do (right now)... i may be blind but i cant see on iphoto where i can add another album to the phone.
Edit: yep.. blind.... the + (add button bottom left)
Edit again: hmmm that adds a folder to iphoto, not to my phone.

Re: iPhone and photos
Your doing it wrong :P
Okay, i'll trying explaining it a different way. Apple wants to you take lots of happy up-skirt snaps during the day, come home and open up iPhoto. This will pull across your "Camera Roll" of new photos into iPhoto.
Once you've done that, you'll want to sort/delete different photos into existing Albums or new ones. Then in iTunes you'll select which albums you wish to sync onto your iPhone. Remember that iPhoto is the complete library of photos you have. The Albums you have/create are for iPhoto. Which you may then sync those lovely albums to your phone so you can brag to mates.
There isn't (yet?) the function to create/modify your Albums directly from the phone.
*edit*
I might need to starting answering Q's using the phone. It would have been quicker

ahhhhhh yep! gotcha..... thanks wabbit!!
fark.. they could have just put an 'add album button'. I think im getting close to jailbreaking... i find apple too restrictive at times.
by the way - funny you should make the up-skirt reference... this all started because i dont want my porn mixed in with my regular images hahaha

Just take a moment to think about that statement *waits*. Okay firstly i see a problem for all Windows users that have an iPhone. What is this thing called Album? Should the user actually open Windows Photo Gallery (WPG) and then actually use it for managing their photos, does the Album created after sync'd become a tagged item in WPG or a folder? Both don't correspond to the word "Album".DexterPunk wrote:fark.. they could have just put an 'add album button'.
Ahh easy, create a "Mowing" photos album, chuck in a dummy image of a... mower with the rest of the panties images. Just select the mower pic as the "Make Key Photo", this'll ensure only the mower pic is shown when browsing your library.DexterPunk wrote:by the way - funny you should make the up-skirt reference... this all started because i dont want my porn mixed in with my regular images hahaha

I have been watching with interest as I thought I was just missing something when I couldn't find an option to put photos in a different album. This is far too hard.DexterPunk wrote:wabbit wrote:Just take a moment to think about that statement *waits*. Okay firstly i see a problem for all Windows users that have an iPhone. Yep I see a very similar problem with setting up playlists. I now have 2 new playlists & I have no idea how they were created or how to delete them. I can't even see how to edit them either from within the phone.
CBF'd hooking into iTunes to see what can be done as I also find the sync function does some weird shit to. Sometimes it thinks I have listened to things and deletes them from the phone during the sync.
For a company located in the world's biggest democracy Apple sure know how to restrict & lock you in to thier ways.

Haha, hell yeah. From memory the standard response is... "Don't like it, fuck off then" I especially like how the same attitude applies to big companies (eg: Optus), not just us little home users.Flinty72 wrote:For a company located in the world's biggest democracy Apple sure know how to restrict & lock you in to thier ways.

Re: iPhone and photos
hence why im considering jailbreaking... the only thing thats stopping me is the void warranty doing that.... and the very very small chance that i could brick the phone... even if that chance is 0.5%, the thought of having a fucked brand new iphone 3Gs and having to pay for it for 2 years makes me hesitate.Flinty72 wrote: For a company located in the world's biggest democracy Apple sure know how to restrict & lock you in to thier ways.

Re: iPhone and photos
Even if I'm not sure whether jailbreaking could really affect warranty in any sorts.. it's pretty easy to "un-jailbreak" if you need to take the phone to repairs.DexterPunk wrote:hence why im considering jailbreaking... the only thing thats stopping me is the void warranty doing that.... and the very very small chance that i could brick the phone... even if that chance is 0.5%, the thought of having a fucked brand new iphone 3Gs and having to pay for it for 2 years makes me hesitate.Flinty72 wrote: For a company located in the world's biggest democracy Apple sure know how to restrict & lock you in to thier ways.

Re: iPhone and photos
Assuming it can be un-jailbreaked after it goes faulty. I love how this is the standard response to jailbreaking an iPhone with no consideration of the type of fault that would make you have to return it. It would probably be a problem that would prevent you from being able to restore it back to factory settings.markus wrote:Even if I'm not sure whether jailbreaking could really affect warranty in any sorts.. it's pretty easy to "un-jailbreak" if you need to take the phone to repairs.DexterPunk wrote:hence why im considering jailbreaking... the only thing thats stopping me is the void warranty doing that.... and the very very small chance that i could brick the phone... even if that chance is 0.5%, the thought of having a fucked brand new iphone 3Gs and having to pay for it for 2 years makes me hesitate.Flinty72 wrote: For a company located in the world's biggest democracy Apple sure know how to restrict & lock you in to thier ways.

Your on fire Flinty
Other than that, you'd wanna make bloody sure you've turned off sending error & crash reports to Apple, before starting any JB'ing. When i went to the Genius bar, alittle app they use called "Synctest" (from memory) calls out all your bullshit instantly. Also sticking your phone in DFU mode and the likes wont help, as they just reinstall the OS again and re test infront of you.
Cracked case or sloppy silent switch will get you a free replacement in under 5mins. Thats your best idea for a swap. They also confirm the s/n on the SIM tray & phone aswell, but unless your me with 2 phones that wouldn't be an issue.

Re: iPhone and photos
I guess there is some things then that you might get away with.
Sorry to digress but back to my iTunes syncing issues I have heard that Winamp can be used with the iPhone and does a lot of things better incl syncing. I have never been a huge fan of Winamp but if reports are true then I may have to check it out. Just not sure if it only works for jailbreaked handsets, anyone know?

Re: iPhone and photos
Iphone's have baseband and the overlying OS, as long as your not fucking with the baseband it will be pretty hard to screw up the phone from a failed Jail Break
About a year ago when 2.0 came out, my mates wife decided to upgrade her jailbroken 2g iphone to the new 20 firmware (including a new baseband that locked out the old jb techniques), trying to get the phone downgraded to 1.5 was one of the most scariest experiences of my life, thought id killed the phone on a number of occasions. Apple really don't want you JB the iphone + couple this with the bullshit blocking google apps to run on the iphone and there attempts to stop people JB phones really is pretty disgusting. If Microsoft tried doing this shit everybody would be getting their pitchforks + fire ready to burn them at the stake but because this is apple it's all ok?
this is why I got a HTC Touch HD, they pretty much don't give a crap what you run on your phone and there are plenty of custom frimwares out there that let you do what ever the hell you want!

Re: iPhone and photos
the short comings of the iphone really are quite insignificant compared to what it does do really well... as far as i can tell, once its jailbroken it can do anything and everything without too much probs. i certainly wouldnt be as happy with anything else.

Open up iTunes and look at the playlists on the left hand side. Modify them as you like or delete the ones you dont want.Flinty72 wrote:I now have 2 new playlists & I have no idea how they were created or how to delete them. I can't even see how to edit them either from within the phone.
This will be the way you've setup the music syncing from iTunes & the phone. Should you choose to only keep for example, the last 3 unheard songs/podcasts on the phone. Then everything is sweet. I prefer "Smart Playlists" from normal ones, as you setup the criteria only once and for the rest of time you don't need to think about it.Flinty72 wrote:I also find the sync function does some weird shit to. Re: iPhone and photos
Wabbit, yep I think my settings are partly to blame but once again I blame it on the limited functionality of Apple's iTunes. The biggest issue for me is that any poscasts I have partly listened to get set as "not new" as there is no in-between so with my sync set up for keeping only new pods these partly listened pods get deleted.
What are these "smart playlists" you speak of and how do you set them up?
Don't get me wrong I love the iPhone even though it is my 1st & only ever smart phone. When your 5 yr old can easily use it then you know it wins on usability hands down. Combine that with unprecedented integration then it's a no brain winner for me, but why restrict it on so many other levels?

Re: iPhone and photos
Flinty. Yep i'm getting ya, below is a quickly made smart playlist, don't worry about the "Month" & "Limit to" settings and what not, I went random Smart Playlists are dynamic lists defined by the rules you've set. Best thing is you can create smart lists from/on top of other smart lists. That tut is for another night.
As for your current issue, I suggest using that smart playlist I attached. Then customise it to your liking. Creating a Smart Playlist by (In iTunes): File menu > New Smart Playlist.Apples info wrote: You can create playlists of certain types of music, songs with certain ratings, or songs that match other rules you specify. iTunes can update these playlists automatically. For example, you could create a Smart Playlist that’s no more than 5 gigabytes (GB) in size and includes your most highly rated jazz songs. Or you could create a Smart Playlist of songs by a particular artist. When you import a new CD from that artist, the songs can be added automatically to the Smart Playlist.
I do a fair bit of research into the 3 operating systems companies I use & support (personally & for work) Microsoft, Novell & Apple. Now I don't work for Apple but I have noticed is they're will to completely trash a project at any stage (device, software or feature) unless it's "perfect" in their eyes (for lack of better words). Take the iPhone as an example, it took over 3 years to R&D before the 1st Gen phone hit the US. Now in that time anyone would think well, you've been able to copy every feature/option other OSes have, yet things like Cut, Copy & Paste didn't hit till OS 3.0. But I'll be fucked if anyone can find a better & easier Cut, Copy, Paste & Undo implementation on any other phone OS.Flinty72 wrote:but why restrict it on so many other levels?
You know Microsoft has their "fantastic" OS on over 140 different types of mobile devices. Narr no money grabbing there, they just wanna help out all those hardware manufactures I say fantastic because i was helping out a good friend with his WinMobile 6.1 phone. Poor poor Pixelboy, I can totally understand why your running the latest builds and what not. After 1.5hrs of using WinMobile 6.1... holy fark. That is truly a first class epic fucking shit house mobile OS. I much prefer the BlackBerry OSes over that any day. Fuck i'd rather look at a tightly clenched cats asshole than use 6.1 again.DexterPunk wrote:because apple wants to make as much damn money as possible.

Haha dont forgot Microsoft & Novell. I do like them aswell. *edit* Quick how to solve this, Oh yeah! OS X still doesn't have a basic drawing application (ie: MS Paint) and even in OSX 10.5.8 you still don't have a real option for persistent network mappings. Going old school. net use z: \\Fan\boi persistent:yeskwijibo wrote:All I have gathered from this thread is that Wabbit is an apple fanboi
