can this be fixed via post processing ?
Gents,
I'm looking for advice. We had some product photo shoot done in the past, and a lot of the images turned out to be really lopsided in my opinion.
In your opinions, is this a bad photo, or is the problem sitting in front of the monitor?
And the real question: can this be fixed with post processing? Does it worth the trouble? Or should we try to make sure we get better raw photos at the next photoshoot?
Mind you we're talking about thousands of photos; not all are such, but a lot of them seem to have lost details, IMHO. Either on one side, or on the legs, etc.
Here's on example (altho this isn't too bad, black suits are so much worse).
The ones where I start to feel really bad are here on our profile at the knot:
http://theknot.ninemsn.com.au/wedding-v ... -tailoring" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The white bg, black suits and the lack of detail I think all compound the issue...
eg this one:

Black stuff is super tricky to photograph. Dex will be able to explain why.
Here is a 30 second Photochop. Bring out the details a little and stopped him falling over.

Specially black material. You can't use highlights to show any form and shape.
Blacks are also (I find) harder to pull detail from in post. It tends to get hugely noisey. I often lean towards the over exposed side of things. Those images aren't too bad, but the photographer looks like he/she could have tweaked things a bit more with a bit more time spent on contrast control. Lighting black or dark material is not as easy as split lighting in portraiture, which seems to be what they have done.

Re: can this be fixed via post processing ?
In his defense it was our first photoshoot session, and it was really time-restricted. We had but two days for a lot of photos. I don't remember how many suits we had but it was a lot, with two models only. We needed certain types (hero/side/etc) for each...plus a few loose, easy-going settings, for other marketing purposes, so yeah, it was a lot.
Thanks for the feedbacks gents - and the quick photoshop session, Norbs !
I notice that you also fixed his skin colour tone - that was bothering me too, it is a bit weird looking, especially on the hands, eh?

Another thing to note. Screen calibration. Again, Dex knows more about it than me, but I have seen some of my photos on other peoples monitors and damn near thrown up.ysu wrote:In his defense it was our first photoshoot session, and it was really time-restricted. Re: can this be fixed via post processing ?
I'm not seeing any disasters here. However:
I hate white backgrounds. They're too dominant when they should be more subdued. I wince whenever I'm forced to use one.
That jacket is too tight on him and his tie isn't all the way up in the first one.
But it's easy for me to be critical. The change of skin tones is a definite improvement.
These are only roughs and there's nothing wrong with the composition IMHO.

Re: can this be fixed via post processing ?
Thanks for the feedback - indeed it's not perfect.
This whole shoot was a first try, and for that I think it wasn't too bad. We had not much spare cash back then, either.
We're going to re-do it all, soon. I'm just not sure how to manage it all so it all comes out near-bloody-perfect
At least we can pay for better models, photographer, etc now
Any of you guys have experience with fashion photography...?

Yes but I'm in Melbourne and I haven't got access to a studio.

Shame. The studio would be the least of the problems, we've hired last time, we could do again.J.D. wrote:Yes but I'm in Melbourne and I haven't got access to a studio.

I know someone who could do shoots for you here in Melbourne. Probably a few people actually.

We will build a Melbourne presence up, but that'll likely be after our next photoshoot.
