i've got some friends in Jersey and they've had no power but been able to use their phones, so maybe the towers are still working.

until you mentioned the towers i hadn't even considered it, but after thinking about it i guess there must be some power somewhere. Maybe they they sorted the important bits out first. I should ask them.

Its always been in my mind after the 2011 QLD floods, where we we're shitting bricks after Telstra and co were telling us once the UPSes run out thats our real problem. Loss (limited really) of communications was going to really hurt us trying to organise all the various important vehicle types moving through the "$77 billion infrastructure" blah blah roads.
