Taking the knob factor out of the equation, it would be the better lens to use for candid shots.
Your 16-35 may also be no better for shallow depth of field than the 24-105. I'd expect that a 105mm portrait up fairly close at f/4 would be narrower than 35mm f2.8.

Re: Been asked to photograph an event for work
Oh awesome. They want me to photograph some prize winners as well For free!
Good job I bought a flash recently.
I'm guessing I can just put it in ETTL, go for something like 85mm and F4 and point the flash up at about 45 degrees and the camera should do the rest?

Not too bad

And these are pictures I took in town at lunchtime and just about avoided a huge downpour.

I think I did a little better this year as I took some more 'story telling' type pictures and I managed to find some places to scope out candid shots which worked a bit better. My 100mm F2.8 macro worked best of all. Good range and nice and wide in the low light giving me good options to play with. In the afternoon I used the 16-35mm to get wider shots of what was going on and I tried some longer exposures (0.5-2secs) from a staircase to try and be a bit different on a couple of the foyer shots.
I wasn't particularly happy with the prize winner ones at the end but they'll do I think. I probably didn't really set the flash up right and the lighting in the auditorium was rubbish. I should have also set the ISO a bit higher to get the shutter speed up a bit more but you earn from these things as you go I guess.

I really like the outdoor ones Kev, the bikes in the rain being the pick for me.

Woo doing this again tomorrow
Hopefully get some better pics of the winners this year. I need to find a better location during the day for the hand shaky pictures I think. Trouble is these places are always really dark!
Hopefully try and get some 'story' shots of the day again too.
