We're in Tas for 3 weeks holiday. I bought the 7D off J.D a while back with no clue about how to use it. My experience has always been taking photo's from within a hide, usually of faces, number plates and other interesting tid bits for others to decipher for use later on.

These aren't awesome, I just didn't know if I should start a new thread to ask for some help or what ever. Sorry if I am in the wrong place for this.

So I was out at a motox track today to test ride a bike and watch two of my mates from army launch in to orbit and I decided to get a bit of praccy in with panning and settings. I am obviously a bit off in the settings, as you can see. Too short an exposure and not enough light? I know I need to improve but would a better lens help me with that as well or should I just keep at it? Basically I want to be able to take really nice pics with the right amount of blur in the wheels and dirt but with the rider and gear lit up and clear. Help is appreciated. Should I learn to use a light meter? Should I use a light?

I notice a lot of noise in the pictures when I display them at full size. Also should I get closer? I was a bit back and using the lens to reach, I didn't want to baulk the lads by being too close.

Pretty good shots which would definitely benefit from a lower shutter speed. For motocross 1/400th will give you some wheel blur and you'll still be able to get a good percentage of shots sharp. Shooting againt the sky allows you to use a faster shutter speed...if your shooting against a background I would prefer to go slower but you'll miss more shots. Good lenses are always better but once you've used them you can never go back. :)
I recommend using shutter priority and exposure compensation and letting the camera do the work.
I wouldn't worry about lights as they will freeze the motion. Try to keep the sun, (not much of it around I'm sure), behind you where you can so that you don't have too many dark shadows but an editing program like Lightroom will help bring them out.
Your exposure is pretty good, any brighter and you'll blow out the sky. Again editing will help.

Your noise is caused by running too high an iso which you should be able to bring down by using a slower shutter speed. The noise in these shots is definitely acceptable.
Your positioning is great. And being back a bit is a good idea. :)
For shooting racing 70-200 or 100-400 is great depending on where you can locate yourself.

Thanks Speed, put the suggestions on my phone for future reference. Appreciate the tips immensely as I want to be able to take the camera ever time we go to the track. JD was kind enough to enclose an expanded guide by Andy Stansfield so I will refer to that an try to apply your suggestions. 7D mark 2 lands in my lap in two weeks so I would like to get my practice before that happens.

Thanks again

Wow, cool. I had one of those plants for a few months and was fascinated by it. I even took it down to the bottom of the garden to feed it some ants :D

Not my photos but a couple of cool shots of the moon last night taken by a couple of mates.

This first shot is 4 photos stitched, showing the ISS orbiting.

No photoshop on the Fremantle Monument photo.
It was taken with a 600mm lens plus 1.4 extender and shot from 750 metres away. The photo is copping plenty of shit from knobs who claim it isn't real.

The more you zoom, the bigger it looks, if you have something in the foreground as a reference. 840mm is a hell of a lot of zoomage. :)

Have you taken any shots or are you planning?

I haven't tried it myself but I like the effect.
I've hardly had my camera out for the last couple of years but I do like zoomage. :) I think long lenses are awesome for portraits as well.

Planning. Been a couple of near misses with the path of the ISS but nothing yet that crosses the moon where I am. I have a daily email feed from calsky to tell me where the ISS is but they haven't crossed here for nearly 2 years now. It'll happen eventually! (and it'll probably be a cloudy night!)

Been a long arse time since I've been here, but thought I'd share some pics from my Vietnam bike trip back in October. Also been a long time since I took any photos of any kind! Some of these were taken on my Canon, most on my phone, so not the best quality. Hope you like! Oh and if you're thinking of doing a similar trip, bloody do it! :D

Emjay and I were asked to photograph a big race meeting last weekend.
These things are crazy fast.
200cc twin engines, developing around 70HP and weighing 160kg including driver.

I’ve hardly used my camera in the last couple of years so my skills are pretty sad and I also made some pretty stupid choices with my settings so I took a lot of shit shots.
Anyway here are some of my faves…..we only photographed the main class as we were racing ourselves and there is always a fair bit of work to do on our own karts in between heats.

This was the dice for the lead for the entire first race. It was an awesome spectacle.
Image

Heat 2 – the guy in the blue on the outside was having engine problems and looked across as the leader flew past.

3rd shot of #21 is most excellent. Good work considering the rusty operator.
I know the feeling tho, I haven't played with my DSLR in a while and it can feel frustrating getting the mind back up to speed.

Better late than never. Merry Christmas. :)

James McFadden World Series Sprintcar driver. Taken at 1/60th which I decided after this day is just too slow. Often times part of the vehicle is sharp but because of the up and down movement not everything is.

Case in point.

James McFadden and James Inglis having a play out high, wide and handsome.

Josh Thompson 7 year od kid with attitude. Mark my words, this kid will be a superstar in years to come.

My latest ride. I was lucky enough to finish WA3 last year, and Aus 6 in my first drive in this beast. Each after having a dnf in the heats.

The little lady and I are set for the 2018 season.
The best thing about having a wife that races too is that I can buy just about anything I like , within reason, so long as I get 2. :)
