Yes I do realise that but the aero element could surely break if hit by a large object & I suspect send shards of CF back into the driver. But I guess a helmet with a bullet-proof visor would be more than adequate protection. I just feel the halo should have been a no-go zone for additional aero elements in the name of safety (even if it's only from a perception perspective).Dr. Pain wrote:The halo is there to stop the head impacts that Maria de Villota and Jules Bianchi suffered and nothing more. So any aero device on top does not compromise what the halo is meant to do.

Might be just me (probably is Stan.... nah, fek it, post it anyways!!), but I find it hard to believe that the halo would've saved Jules Bianchi (unless the tractor had one too...).Dr. Pain wrote:The halo is there to stop the head impacts that Maria de Villota and Jules Bianchi suffered and nothing more. Would have done nothing for Jules and little, if anything for Maria.

Theres still 2 big gaps for debris to get the driver. The screen would have been more protection. The halo will stop a wheel but a spring like Massa got could easily deflect off the underside of the halo and end up in his chest.

Re: F1 2018 Launch and Testing Topic
Apparently they did the modelling and there was some x % chance that the halo would have reduced the severity of Massa's accident.
I'm not convinced either but hopefully it really is temporary given the ground Indycar are making with the screen.

Have the other cars got the shark tooth windscreen that's on the Merc?

I think McLaren forgot to design a livery.

Marc Priestleys channel is good for a bit of insight into the tech of each car.

I actually really like the McLaren. I reckon on the track & in the flesh it'll be stunning.

I'm banking on they finally have a title sponsor and the colour scheme is for them when they finally drop it onto the car.
Yellow and purple are the colours of Hallmark, The LA Lakers, FedEx, or maybe even Yahoo! What's your top pics
Then again, it could just be inspired by this

I thought the shark fins were finally gone this year? Or had to be significantly reduced. I think I still dislike them more than the halo.

I don't understand how people dislike them. It performs a benefit :/

Re: F1 2018 Launch and Testing Topic
Cause they are ugly plus the benefit is only very marginal especially when you consider that once the slip (yaw) angle hits a certain threshold the car becomes very hard to stop from spinning.wabbit wrote:I don't understand how people dislike them. It performs a benefit :/
But I hate the halo's a lot more than I ever hated the fins. I am also starting to hate the amount of aero elements creeping back onto the cars.
I too am in the camp of not being very excited as I usually am seeing the launch of the F1 cars let alone for the start of the season. Liberty had the chance to revamp F1 but instead have really done two-fifths of fark all & just fluffed around the edges. Then factor in they have pissed off most of us, their southern hemipshere fans with the 1hr time delay on the races with the best tracks they race on all year.

Hang on a sec, marginal... lots of elements are "marginal" but they all have a job to do otherwise they wouldn't be on the car. Unless I'm not understanding you Duke and Dex, if it were the other way around having lots of pieces that didn't do anything everyone would be cracking the shits.
As for the ugly comment, far out man that's rich. Plenty of other products in the world design things to be pleasing and then get call on it by people "eeww I'd rather have something functional" well fuck me.
What's that saying about form following function (whatever the quote is sorry just off the top of my head )
Duke, if you haven't already. Please watch (link)

Re: F1 2018 Launch and Testing Topic
I thought they might have gone the GP2 route with sharkfins and just had a sort of tail off the top of the airbox which would have served as the placement for the driver number and name.

Re: F1 2018 Launch and Testing Topic
Liberty are trying to make F1 more accessible in the US and the hour later start only impacts New Zealand the worst then us with 11.10 pm starts. Maybe be 600,000 viewers at most. If you watch TV it's not like you're going to see all the racers anyway unless you pay. So we get fucked multiple ways now.
