Playstation Classic

Post by Big Kev »

Anyone seen this?
https://blog.eu.playstation.com/2018/09 ... led-games/

Looks interesting. Circa $100 for a PS1 with 20 pre-loaded games on it. Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, R4 Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3 and Wild Arms announced so far although I'm only slightly interested in RR and tekken from that list.

Sadly no dual shock controller and I think they're seriously missing a trick not to put in the ability to download old classics from an app store for $5 a piece.

I'd love to see Wipeout and Tomb Raider 1 on it though, and maybe GT1 and Res Evil. Very tempted but I'll see what the full games list is when it's announced.

I actually still have my PS1 around here somewhere.

Don't kid yourself. Old games are never as good as you remember them.

My PS1 stopped working years ago. Had to run it upside down for a while then on one side and then it stopped altogether.

Yeah graphically they might turn out to be pants but I might be tempted to fork out 100 notes to find out if the gameplay is still there.

You'll never see Gran Turismo on it unfortunately, licencing deals are a bitch for that kind of thing.

If they had a dualshock controller, I might be more interested. I expect that, like the nintendo mini's, they will be able to be modded for more games very easily

I got the SNES Classic and probably played on it for like 10 hours and then boxed it up, I even put about 100 roms on there lol. It was interesting to play some old classics like Ghouls & Ghosts, Star Wars or Flashback but ultimately it couldn't hold my interest or my relatively limited free time.

I think a Playstation Classic would be much the same for me, like the SNES I didn't own one but played a bit through friends so the motivation would be much the same, some nostalgia and a chance to play some classics I missed but it would probably just be a waste.

I still have my AMSTRAD 6128K and all my old games for it. It never gets used & I couldn't even get the kids interested in it either. Pretty much sums up why I'm not interested in something like this.
So I'll just hang onto all the great memories from using it when I was a cool kid.

If you're after old classics, you can run a lot of things via emulators, some even online (as "in a browser")
For example, there's an online ZX spectrum emulator http://www.onsite-computers.co.uk/play- ... nline.html
Or run old Amiga games in an emulator: https://archive.org/details/softwarelibrary_amiga#
Or even old pc titles: https://classicreload.com/

And I'm pretty sure there are heaps more. You can potentially get a ps1 emulator, too, if anyone has bothered to create one. We've got incredibly powerful computers today to be able to emulate anything 10+ years past.

But to be honest, old Classics are usually too painful to play by today's standards.

I'm actually playing the revamped Bard's Tale (orig title from '85) but this one has been made much more user friendly - and much easier, too - so it's actually quite playable. Still, for a newcomer, it maybe a bit too old-ish. For me it's memory lane, and works in 4k :)
Surprise, no sig. Now there is. Or is there?

I played Crammonds GP3 recently in an emulator. The nostalgia was intense for 15 mins then I got bored.. I'll pass on the PS classic.
