NBN decision

Post by smithcorp »

NBN is now available for us. Nervous about switching from Optus HFC to NBN HFC. Will go with Aussie Broadband if I do switch but shitting bricks that NBN service will be worse than what I've got.

Anyone had experiences moving from Optus cable to NBN they'd like to share?

I had Optus HFC. Ordered NBN and they used an unmarked Telstra HFC cable for the NBN connection (Telstra HFC wasn't available in my area). Went with Aussie, perfect 100/40 everyday, all day. If it's a HFC thing they'll be random maintenance and NBN outages but they're all notified in advance.

Damm I missed this, all the wisdom wasted.

When It came to my old town about 18 months ago, just prior we were getting 24 - 30 bps down say 8 up.
Bear in mind we were the first house down the street from the business zone area, with an exchange 1 Km away and a high school across the road and another private secondary 5 doors up on our side.
Telstra put a info' van in town and when we inquired we were guaranteed no drop of our existing system, but promising double figures from our old connection.

Two days after the switch we were nobbled to 12 down and 2 up.
We complained and were told the Tesltra part time employees could never have said what they did, and our previous promised speed was based on "area average", with no promise confirmed.
Even with signing up, reluctantly to new bigger, brighter, shiny new NBN, we got 22 down and 5 up, worse of than we were on ADSL 2.
We were touted the business plan, but after talking to a few locals who had that, they were worse off as well.
Teltra, when we complained and pointed out our proximity to schools running uber internet for free, told us, and I quote the fat pimply airhead in the tesltra "information portal"
"There's your problem, they're taking all your internet".

That had a big reason with us leaving.

ADSL2+ here Cutter was 10/2 so I would have been happy with your old speeds.

I'm with Telstra, have been since ADSL, FTTC and I'm happy as it's pretty much nailed at 47/18. But I am using a Telstra smart modem :yikes: and I do so as I got a call one evening from some chick, 3 days after FTTC was switched on here, to organise the gear for NBN connection. At first I thought it was a joke until the gear arrived 3 days later and a text from Telstra saying "Go connect to the NBN!". It worked, I didn't pay anything for the gear and I didn't organise any of it other than just saying yes. Because I am a tight arse and still using the Telstra smart modem I got for free, my DNS is locked to Telstra and it can not be changed also they can update the firmwear from their end. But I haven't had any issues with this. I don't run a VPN and I don't seemed to blocked from anything but they must had a nice profile of me by now.

Overall I'm well please with FTTC and Telstra. Since October I think there has only been 3 times where everything ran like shit but I think that was the NBN in general doing that.

Got an email from Telstra saying my connection had been tweaked and asking me to restart the modem.

I did so and got this result. Dunno if it's good or not.

They increased the upload from 1 to 5

Some who were only on the 50/1 plan found their speed increased to 100/5 for no extra cost.

The download speed is unreal if it's on a 100mbps connection. The upload is rather poor. Is this to a local server (I guess it is)?

This is mine right now - kinda usual. I'm on a 100/40 ftth (local)

The international is significantly poorer - again, usual.

Surprise, no sig. Now there is. Or is there?

Yep Sydney. D/L to a Californian server was 63.90MBps and luckily I don't upload! 2.8Mbps.

Low upload rates have always been a feature of HFC as long as I've been using it - 15-17yrs. It's always been the case for me that any significant upload traffic severely impacts the download capacity also. E.g. on a FNF night, we can have 2 Netflix streams running in the house without impacting my racing experience, but the moment someone decides to update their snapchat or start a skype or hangouts video call, the whole thing goes to shit.

I've gotten some letters this week, so it would seem that NBN is finally coming my way too. It'll be HFC too, so not a lot will change for me.
