I put these in the Twitter thread under "One for the shit pile".

That's a nasty boom...

From unconfirmed sources
2,700 tons of Ammonium Nitrate. According to the Lebanon Security Chief that is what was stored in the facility with the fireworks or near the fireworks.

Apparently the Ammonium Nitrate had been confiscated by authorities and stored. It had been planned to be moved, but wasnt.

Amazing shockwave. This was 3,000 tonnes of the stuff. There's 300,000 tonnes of the same stuff stored on Kooragang Island, Newcastle!

Same thing happened in Galveston Texas in 1947. About 2000 tonnes went up in a cargo ship and it classed as on of the largest non nuclear explosion.

I was shocked when I saw the news today. They were having a tough time already, now this. :(

We make the stuff here in Gladstone. Expanded a couple of years ago as well. It'll be one fucker of a crater if that goes up.

What made that one deadly (you learn this when doing induction for the Ammonium Nitrate and Cyanide plant) is there were 2 explosions. One to blow all the shrapnel into the air and a second one which jettisoned shrapnel for hundreds of kilometres. It provides itself with oxygen which makes it extremely volatile once exposed to fire. The way it stored and produce means hosing it down pretty much neutralises it and it rarely, if ever, ignites from diesel anymore.

Drone images revel the aftermath damage.

The 2nd video is pretty crazy, the whole warehouse is gone along with the dockland, just a 200m crater with ocean in its place!!!

The Lebanon explosion was the equivalent of 1-1.5 kilotons of tnt. The 2 in China 5 years ago registered 2.3 for the first and 2.9 for the second one.
