I don't really know what's going on with the aircraft there but you could tell from their voices it wasn't good.

Yep, not only do clouds have some major downdrafts, but once you fly into them you have no idea which way your plane is pointing. What often happens is pilots end up in a spiral dive. They bank a bit without knowing it, the altimeter starts to unwind, they pull up, which steepens the bank and increases the dive, they keep doing that, wondering why it isn't working and then smash into the ground almost inverted. These blokes were lucky (though CSA is trying to get in touch...).

The other thing about this, is that they were already close to the ground, because they were ridge-soaring. No room to do something stupid like that.
