I've always wondered how close they are to doing that when they go full beans out of the gate. Pretty close by the looks of things.
It would be Bottas though wouldn't it. The poor bloke can't get a break.

Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas has been handed a three-place grid penalty at the Styrian Grand Prix for spinning in the pit lane in practice.
According to the stewards report they were trying something new by leaving the garage in 2nd gear. I guess it didn't work

I'm pretty sure the pit limiter in V8supercars stops them from giving it full beans. Clearly not in F1.

SOFT!!!
I get the link to the R3.5 incident but shit, that kind of slow down off to the side to acknowledge ones team at the finish isnt exactly rare.

That's just a side effect of the supercar limit being so low, they can give full beans but they hit the rpm limiter by just breathing on the throttle

Easy fix for this, put the finish lines at the other end of pit lane. Bonus of this is you can actually run's to the finish line like you do at Montreal!

Fair point.
Finish lines should be at the same locations as start lines.

A bit of googling suggests simple practicality.
The finish line has to be where they have space for a gantry for the flag waver. The start line needs to be far enough forward to fit all of the grid on to the straight (and so can be in different places depending on the number of cars) and so often they're at opposite ends of the pit.

Was this always the case tho? I seem to recall circuits like Monza making a change to dragging the finish line back down the grid some 10-15 years ago. I always assumed it was for the bikes and the epic splipstream battles the lower classes have running to the line.Big Kev wrote: ↑Wed Jun 30, 2021 6:14 am A bit of googling suggests simple practicality.

We also see fairly regular footage form the starters box that shows the front of the grid and seems to be positioned just a bit up track of the start line so that have vision of the entire formation. Not sure why that same gantry/building isnt used to wave a finish flag.
When I started to watch F1 I dont recall the split start finish being a thing.

Re: 2021 Formula 1 BWT Grosser Preis Der Steiermark
Didn't Schumacher exploit that when he was given a pit-stop penalty on the last lap many years ago? He took his penalty on the last lap. That meant he'd crossed the line so as far as the timing system was concerned and therefore won the race even though he hadn't passed the chequered flag. By the time he'd served his penalty and passed the flag, he'd dropped a position but still won the race.
Or am I totally making that up?

Which of course, if BS because every track has a starters box at the start line, and none of them have anything more than a gap in the fence for the checkers (as well as waving it at the start line)Big Kev wrote: ↑Wed Jun 30, 2021 6:14 am A bit of googling suggests simple practicality.

The reason that I've been told is that the finish line cannot be part way down the pit lane for various timing reasons with the pit lane, and the end of the pitlane is normally too close to T1. Of course, this doesn't apply to RBR, and really most F1 tracks

I also recall Monza moving their line to discourage last lap slip streams to the line because it made for boring races. It seemed other tracks changed around the same time. I can't find any articles on it though.
