Finally got to do the Convict. Due to rain damage they rerouted the 68km to do the back end of the 100km route. That bumped it up to 74km. Managed to finish just under 5 hours which I'm pretty happy with. The leaders did it in 3.

There was at least 500 riders in each of the 3 distances. Pretty cool camping the night in a town swamped by mountain bikers.

182nd/430 finshers overall, 73rd/184 in the 40-49 age group. Pretty happy with that. Had a whole pizza tonight where I would normally only have 1/2.

CX National Series Rounds 1 and 2

Port Adelaide CC hosted the first two rounds of the CX national series in the parklands in and around the Superdrome. Unfortunately with Victoria's lockdown, and probably general reluctance to travel at the moment, there were a lot of racers that were missing from across all grades :( Nevertheless, the event went ahead and it was a ripper.

The course was fairly sandy and slippery and early on in practice served up a good amount of 3-corner jacks :/ tyre sealant was a must. This was my first race in Masters-5 :o geez i'm old. On the plus side, I was looking forward to not being lapped by the baby-Masters riders as in previous years :D

Race 1, and I blasted off the front row of the grid and got the hole shot! Woot! :D Leading into the first corner, I never looked back. Unfortunately, not looking back didn't prevent all/most of my competitors from passing me :D I finished 4th out of 6, and felt like I did okay.

Race 2, I had a strong start, but like Race 1, dropped back through the field relatively quickly. Felt like the course (being run in reverse from Race 1) was harder overall as it required more pedalling. Finished 6th out of 8 starters.

Your race reports are the best Carl. Always so positive despite the result.

well, I'm never likely to win :P
So I figure you have to look for positives when you can. If nothing else, I utterly blitzed everyone who didn't sign up :D V was on the podium both days, which meant we had beer to go with dinner :D

had a couple of races over the weekend.. Road on the Saturday, CX State champs on the Sunday. Both had me in the hurtbox. I don't think i've been doing a lot of high intensity work recently, and it really showed.

Saturday race had to be stopped due to this:

Good thing number 13 had his number upside down, otherwise he might have had bad luck  2 people taken away in an ambulance.

Sunday CX race was well fun. Racing nose to tail for the entire race for the prestigious 10th place in Masters 4. Went for a passing move over the barriers on the last lap, nearly face planted [ :aussie: ] , recovered, and then rolled the dude in the sprint to the line :D Epic! :D

also got a beanie for being a good volunteer and showing up early :D

National CX Series returned to Adelaide over the weekend for Rounds 1 and 2 this year, and to celebrate the occasion it bucketed down. I think we had ~50mm of rain over the weekend, mostly on the Sunday. The course was around the grounds of the Adelaide Superdrome and the adjacent Foresters Forest park.

Round 1 was pretty awesome fun. Just enough rain to make the surface tacky and grippy, with the odd puddle about the place. As usual, I didn't really trouble the pointy end of the field. :P

Round 2 was epic. The Masters 5+ race that I was in had probably the worst of the conditions. Large sections of the course were flooded and finding parts of the course that weren't underwater was an effort. I think i now have a seized bottom bracket that needs attention :/ This is one of those races that you look back on and think "that was fun".. but you're certainly not thinking that while you're out there!

A couple of the enduro's I've been doing have been rain affected. Last weekend it rained the night before. The first run down on a steep section with muddy berms I was shitting myself more than usual but it was definitely fun. Shifts the focus from trying to go fast, because you can't, to just trying to stay upright :)

Raced the same tracks in Jan and went 27 seconds faster this time despite the iffy conditions. Pretty pleased with that.

That's just showing off getting air like that :P

Closest I've come to those conditions in MTB was during a night time stint during a 24 hour race. I remember the feeling of skating all over the shop on every single corner and being super relieved when i get to the end of the lap!.

Over the weekend we had the final round of the AusCycling CX State Series for South Australia...
Through a combination of consistency, luck and fortunate circumstances, I walked away with the bronze medal overall for C-grade. :D yay me! :D
