They are 12V 50W gloves I think. I replaced mine with 12V 35W and they seem bright enough (i've been living with half of them for ages anyway). One of mine isn't working still though.. might be the fitting itself has carked it.

can it be replace with LED downlights, eg this one:

this seems to be roughly the same size. The diameter is spot on, the height is while wrong - mine is about 45mm this one is 55mm - the current fitting seems accommodating enough IMHO.

Worth a try? If I'd replace all the lights in the dining area & kitchen (10) this could save quite a bit of electricity on the long run, I reckon.

Yes but definitely go talk to someone at a lighting shop in my opinion. Also check out one in action if possible. The one in the link above says it replaces a 55w halogen but I would still want to compare them side by side to check the light output.

Also if you do end up buying some, go for "Warm White" rather than "Cool White". Cool white outputs light which is even worse than a fluoro, very cold / blue looking and makes the rooms / people in your house look terrible.

get a LED replacement.. will last for 10 years and save a ton of power!!

be careful with cheap Chinese led down lights, they can get incredibly hot (even hotter than halogen down lights) and can be a fire danger
