Re: Australia is so far behind. (Electric cars)
Yeah the range tests are a bit BS, The NEDC that most manufactures are forced to use are commonly known as Not Even Darn Close.
WLTP seems to be closer, but it seems like its a hard test to get right.. battery condition/temp/and type of driving makes a huge impact on range.
Ultimately my view is I wouldn't buy a car without 400km of range when fully topped up, that seems to be a good number for a few days of driving around doing shopping without having to worry about plugging in every day and a trip to the coast and back with a bunch of breathing room.

Re: Australia is so far behind. (Electric cars)
The range depends (just like petrol) on what sort of driving you're doing too.
If you're on a long road with no braking involved you miss out on all the regen opportunities you would get around a town. Pretty much the opposite of a petrol car where a long cruise is when it's at its most efficient. Which brings me back to my comment about electric being perfect for city life but not elsewhere.

The amusing part of AU being so dependent on petrol vehicles is how we've managed to rid ourselves of most if not all of our own oil refining capacity.

No, Cars 2 and it turns out that the biofuel is not only regular petrol, but it can kill cars too.smithcorp wrote:Isn't this the plot of Cars 3?

That's awesome too!
Norbs your bike is a ludicrously old invention better turf it.
I also hate to tell you but electric motors are older than internal combustion.

The bike is not killing the planet, unless I am putting out more CO2 than I expect. Dont start me on bike races however.
With regards to electric motors, yes they are older, but we can generate electricity without burning dinosaurs. I dont expect the Porsche eco fuel to take off, but I said the same about reality TV!

Have you seen this? Had a good look at the options available when the wife needed a car, but like most people looking for an EV at the moment there's not much out there that is worth getting apart from a Tesla. Ended up getting a Mazda 2 for the interim.norbs wrote:How long before some enterprising cars salesman starts selling packages. EV, solar system and battery?

Pay a subscription for the car, they install the charger, insurance and servicing all covered.
I keep saying the next car will be an EV - the Hyundai Ionic 5 looks good, Model Y is probably too expensive. If Fiat pulls out an Abarth EV with decent numbers I would seriously consider that.

Hyundai Ionic 5 is a very nice looking machine. Hope they do something smaller with that design language, like an updated Kona. Still won't be able to afford one though.

Me and SWMBO are going to an Electrikana in Devonport next month.
A number of makers and importers are having a day long look /try /drive session of various models.
Hopefully will decide the next car we choose

Eesh. That'll bite us in the arse if it starts getting difficult to buy ice cars before we have decent charging infrastructure in place.

Re: Australia is so far behind. (Electric cars)
That UK number is almost certainly not pure EVs. More likley to be hybrids in order to make it look much better than it is.
Also a '19 to '20 year comparison is terribe because 2020 was the lowest car sales year since the war, due to showrooms being shut so any sale of anything really skews the stats. There are currently nearly 200 VW ID3's on the used market.... but they're all VW-bought dealer demos for instance.

Re: Australia is so far behind. (Electric cars)
Yeah, no way that 1 in 10 cars here is BEV. I sometimes walk the dog around a little village which must be the perfect EV demographic (plenty of money in big houses with driveways etc.), and even there I reckon they are about 1 in 70.
There's certainly more than there was a couple of years ago so they are definitely on the up.

Re: Australia is so far behind. (Electric cars)
It's percentage of new car sales.
Last year, 6900 electric cars were sold in Australia.
Although that was 2.7 per cent more than in 2019, it accounted for just 0.75 per cent of total cars sold in Australia that year, which was a much smaller proportion than that sold in the UK, US and Europe.
Electric vehicle sales in the EU increased their market share from 3.8 per cent in 2019 to 10.2 per cent in 2020.
Meanwhile, their market share rose from 3.1 per cent to 10.7 per cent in the UK, from 7.6 per cent to 8.1 per cent in California, and from 56 per cent to 75 per cent in Norway.

Re: Australia is so far behind. (Electric cars)
We probably buy a lot more used cars. Doesn't the registration/roadworthy rules mean there's not a lot of old cars sold over there due to high costs?
