Coloured lighting on the horizon? The sand to the right of the sun has an orange glow to it.

In the one with the vines there is different colours of grass. Does that already happen or is it something for 1.8?

I think that sand to the left is 1 block higher and 1 block closer than the chest, so you're just seeing the corner of it.

Hardly played with default textures. The mods I've been using must have grass set to be a uniform colour. I saw there is a gradient file in there which must be what controls that.

it would be equal height with the chest, or even a bit higher since the lid of the chest now moves. so it would overshadow the chest a bit if it were higher.

Some biomes wont change the grass color much, others will change it heaps. Depends where you are. Load up LB PHOTO REALISM textures, that has some massive grass changing.

Is this close? Used a piston since the base is probably similar height to the base of the chest.

Here's the setup. I was standing on on the highlighted block so that my view lined up with its side.

I realised the chest is 2 wide, so I put another piston and tried again. If you look at the pixel pattern in the sand, this is almost exactly the same. I think he's a fraction more to the left but I've already spent too much time on this to diddle with that :)

Huh? There's no render error there. Just lined up weird + the basic lighting making the 2 different levels of sand indistinct.

Yeah, it's deceptive the way it's lined up etc. Wasn't sure myself until I put it together in the game :)

Bummer, looks like it's delayed, but it's at least for testing and quality assurance reasons for once. :D

I'm confused... do they always post news articles in the future?

1.9 will need new areas generated because the new biome code isn't finished for 1.8.

That's why you should not read upcoming features discussions...
You'd be very happy to play the new version, but now you've ruined it for yourself.
